S just talked to a D1 track coach who said that his times would get him a small scholarship. The coach told him to apply, and he would be put on the coach’s “protected list.” What is the significance of that term?

I don’t think there’s really any significance of this, has he been invited on an offical visit? Any mention of a letter of intent or anything?

I’d just ask the coach what that means. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

A guess is that it means either that he is protected from being rejected without the coach getting a chance to change the result or that he is protected from being rejected period.

MaineLonghorn: earlier this year there was discussion of protects, tips, etc. in DIII, top LAC setting. Don’t know how DI differs.

Royal, thanks for the link, it was helpful! “Protected” sounds encouraging, at least. I thought DS’s stats were in line for the DI school he’s considering, so that makes sense he would be protected and not tipped.

ImCrazy, the coach did mention a visit (“You live a long way from here, but I think we can fit a visit into our budget”), but arrangments haven’t been made yet, so we’ll see what happens.
