Protecting wood musical instrument in power outage (no heat)

Any advice? Temperature is dropping and we are not optimistic about getting the heat back any time soon. Instrument is in its case and now wrapped in moving blankets.

Blankets are a good idea. Do you have an interior closet you can leave it in?

Keep it off the floor too and if you have a multi story house, remember that heat rises so put it upstairs.

Not one that will retain heat unfortunately

Space heater if you have electricity ?

My oldest works at a high end strings shop. They say the instrument should be fine with the cold. You only need to consider the humidity as a problem. If the air is super dry, do you have a humidifier inside the case?

Thank you for asking your oldest!

We don’t have a humidifier in the case. We do still have gas on the stove so could produce some steam periodically. Any ideas on a safe, makeshift humidifier?

Wet a sponge (damp is fine, not wringing wet) and put it in a ziploc bag. Poke small holes in the ziploc bag.

Voila! A DIY humidifier. Put it in the instrument case and keep the case closed. You can continue with the blankets or quilts wrapped around it.

You may need to re wet the sponge periodically. But it should last a day or so.

FYI space heaters are generally a bad idea, because they further dry the air and can heat too much and too close to the instrument.
