Protective Eyewear fits over prescription glasses

In a chemistry lab, every student is required to wear protective glasses. DS wears prescription glasses (not the contact lens). It is very uncomfortable to wear protective glasses over his prescription glasses. I heard his lab TA is very strict about whether eyes are fully covered.

Does anybody here know where to buy one that nicely fits over prescription glasses? Thanks in advance.

I’m pretty sure you can get prescription goggles. Go to the place where you usually get your eyeglasses and ask them about getting prescription protective goggles.

Thanks! Does a common retail store like EyesMasters carry protective goggle? When we were there (or similar stores), we did not see any like that. We do not know much about more specialized (high-end?) stores.

search around on this website for ideas.

There are lots of places you can buy a variety of safety glasses to fit over prescription glasses. Try Cole Parmer

or VWR or even Lowes or Home Depot.

People do it at my work all the time. You should be able to find a pair that is comfortable, not stylish mind you but comfortable.

And if your S will be majoring in science or eng. I second the suggestion to just buy a pair of prescription safety glasses. The big differnce between regular glasses and safety will be the side shields.

When son was in karate I got prescription safety goggles from eye dr. They had several styles in their catalog book. I have seen them at several places on display also. They should be able to get a sample or two for son to check out. I also got him a pair of rx swim goggles and swim mask. The catalogs have lots of eyewear.

I have never heard that there is something called prescription safety google. How stupid am I! I should have bought one for him long time ago.

Maybe I should start by asking his eye dr to see if he has a catalog book for this. I guess I can only see the picture of it rather than actually try it (a display sample) on, right?

What is complicated for us is that DS is at the college now, so it is up to us to decide it for him. I am sorry for him as he has suffered through many labs in the past, just because we did not know anything about the prescription google.

Thanks!

Our eyeglass place has a couple of sports goggles on display. They usually have a kid size and an adult size to try on. I think he also offers prescription swim goggles and a snorkeling goggles.

mcat, it is a good thing that your son’s TA is so hell-bent on safety. When I was TAing ages ago, I would kick anyone without safety goggles out of the lab. Eyesight is precious.

If getting a prescription pair is too expensive or too much trouble, there are many places that sell goggles that go over prescription eyewear. They are cheap enough ($10-15) so you can buy several styles and your son can choose the ones he likes.

There are side shields available for some styles of prescription eyeglasses, but that may not fly by your son’s TA.

Full face shields providemore protection, less fogging and that elusive welder chic look.

Sports goggles may not be approved for chemical splash safety. I would look for laboratory specific glasses/goggles.

I agree … I do not know but I’d be sure to ask. My youngest uses sports goggles which have vents to circulate air (cooler, less fogging, less sweat, etc) … however these holes may not be OK for use in a science lab. Sports safety and lab safety are protecting against different specific risks … and may have different solutions.

The cheapest goggles available in our bookstore fit comfortably over my glasses and they were only about $8. Maybe he should try a larger pair, rather than protective glasses, which don’t offer side protection anyways.

Do not use sports goggles in the lab. Part of the “safety” in safety glasses is from the side shields, and part comes from the chemical permeability/reactivity of the lenses themselves.

Back when I was in the lab everyday, we always kept some extra UVEX goggles around, for ourselves and for visitors.

When I taught chemistry full time, I had a pair of “instructor’s goggles” from Flinn Scientific, which cost about $15 at the time. They were a zillion times more comfortable than the student goggles (which cost about $3 then) and were just fine over my glasses. I tried to find a link but my Flinn login id has experienced… however, any science teacher would be able to help your son order those.
