I am tempted to try a protein powder but am not sure . . . Anyone a fan (of any particular brand)? I also have looked at the shakes and bars, but those seem a lot of extra calories.

I like the Whole Foods vanilla whey protein powder. I add a scoop to yogurt/fruit/juice smoothies. I don’t like soy powders because I think soy is overprocessed to make protein powder.

S1 drinks protein powder mixed with water. I think it’s a chocolate flavor. He takes various supplements. He’s in the military and works out daily. His favorite store is the Vitamin Shoppe.

I’m not a fan. I’ve tried lots of brands and I think I’m just to lazy to mix my own. All the bars caused increase in my cholesterol and never helped my appetite. I am thrilled to have found plain greek yogurt. It has no added fat or sugar and keeps my full for several hours.

A hard-boiled egg or a cup of non-fat Greek yogurt is my favorite “protein bar”.

Rachel Cosgrove is a fan of protein shakes immediately after working out. Personally, I have no problem eating enough protein, so I haven’t felt the need to go that route. I eat a high protein diet. If I needed more protein, I would just eat more meat, poultry, eggs, etc. I think the vegetarians and vegans probably struggle to get enough protein to build lean muscle and support their workouts.

My shortfall has been trying to get enough fiber in my diet because I eat very few grains and breads. As I shift to more of a maintenance mode, I’m trying to add some beans and baked potato and more high fiber stuff into my diet. I already eat a lot of brocolli, salad, etc. and I’ve starting taking psyllium husk capsules to crank up my fiber intake.

All the Whey happened to be on sale the last time I needed some protein powder, so I bought it. It’s not too bad - I think mine is chocolate peanut butter, although it mostly just tastes like chocolate. They also have flavors like cinnamon bun and cupcake which I’ve heard are pretty good too.

I enjoy hemp protein (look it up!).

I make high protein powder shakes and keep them handy at home and at work so I don’t miss a meal. I use chocolate or vanilla and whirl them in the blender with water and ice and whatever else I want to flavor them until they are true shake thick. I have a tendancy to be a non-eater…can go more than a day and “forget” to eat because I’m so busy and it’s taking a toll on me as a age. I tried them two years ago and they really help me keep my weight stable and keep my glucose low. I don’t eat red meat so the extra protein helps keep everything balanced. Glucose was creeping up little by little toward the high side of normal and my doctor gave me the “lecture.”

Biochem (sold at Whole Foods and elsewhere) makes a whey based protein powder that is ranked as one of the best out there on a number of nutritional and athletic performance sites that provide science to back up their conclusions. A scoop with a cup of skim milk, some strawberries, blueberries and a banana if you like makes for a delicious, low calorie and filling smoothie with 30 grams of protein. Cliff Bar also makes a protein bar with 20 grams of protein and lower carbs than the normal Cliff Bar and the chocolate peanut butter variety is one of my guiltless pleasures when on a long bike ride or grabbing a snack on the go.

Beware websites that toute “diet and nutrition information” that are really nothing more than marketing sites to sell the author’s newest book. Very often they are filled with slanted or even unfounded information designed to induce readers to buy into the newest diet flavor of the month.

I’ve been working on getting more protein in my diet and have not found a protein bar that I think actually tastes good. Some are better than others, but IMO most are like cardboard. I like Greek yogurt (20g of protein in 8oz) as a protein source. I also use a protein powder (Teras Whey–an organic whey protein); I make a smoothie using the whey protein along with fruit (usually berries) and water and ice cubes. A packet of the Tera’s whey protein has 20g of protein and 5g of carbs. There are millions of protein powders available. It made my head hurt looking at all of them. I asked for a recommendation from my local health food grocer.

The need for more protein is greatly overrated. Why? It does not taste as good as piece of chocolate, which greatly reduces hunger and increases your energy. I just stick to 85% chocolate as a snack, do not need to prepare it anyhow, could be by you in any drawer, anyway, works just perfectly for me. I exercise over 2 hrs every day, including lifting weights (but only for about 15 min., no need for more in addition to other activites). I have ton of energy left at the end of my day.

I like the first protein bar I ever tried from the 1960s. They don’t have the carob flavor that I can find but they still make peanut butter Tigers Milk bars.
I also like Bumble bars which are seed based and these.
