Protein Powders/Additives

Be sure to look for Fiber One Original (left box). When the stores had a shortage of it a few months ago, I had to buy a box of the “Honey Clusters” versions (right box), and it has sugar (vs 0g) and less fiber than the whopping 18g of fiber in Original

Note - The honey clusters (right box) has a larger serving size. I think that’s because it is a “fluffier” flake texture… does not feel as feeling. (So that is part of the reason for the calorie diff. There are also is more iron in the honey kind.). Either variety has a bit of protein. (even without the milk). Definitely I prefer to get my sugar from banana or berries… not the cereal.

@sushiritto - Thought of you at the bulk store when I bought chia seeds and flax seeds and sesame seed

Chia pudding - Ran a test yesterday with a simple recipe (1/2c milk, 2T chia seeds, 1tsp honey; works best if you shake in a jar). Did one with 2% milk and one with almond milk that I was trying to finish up. Ha, liked them both the same. The real milk has more calcium and protein. If you are vegan or prioritizing calorie reduction, almond milk (or oat or soy) would be better.

I made it. I didn’t have any mason jars at the moment, so I used a couple clear glass tea/coffee mug with Saran Wrap.

We’ll see how they turn out in the AM. I can also see how some protein powder would work in v2.0.

I’ll throw some fruit and flax seed, hemp seed and wheat germ on it tomorrow.

I love these simple recipes. The 2-ingredient (more like 8-10 now) pancakes is a staple of several breakfasts each week.

In the past I’ve made this recipe in custard cups (or coffee mug) with vanilla instead of honey. That does not require the shaking since not as sticky as honey……I stir it, leave on counter for 5min and stir again before putting into the fridge. I figured you might find a way to enhance it with protein powder

For those who have not had chia seed before, you might want to try using in a way that has smaller amount than the 2T (7g fiber) in this recipe. I’ve read that for some people they are bothersome to the digestion.

Another chia pudding tip - You can shake in a jar, then pour into single serving container. I did this sequentially for my experiment of milk vs almond milk. But I imagine you could do a multi-batch.

Made the chia pudding! Just waiting for it to gel lol. Thanks!!

Another quickie dessert recipe:
1/3c nonfat greek yogurt + 1T peanut butter powder + something more crunchy (I used chocolate chips, but you could do nuts or seeds or raisins or coconut)

I’m sorry to report that I ate my two 3-ingredient chia seed pudding thingees and they didn’t really appeal to me. :smiling_face_with_tear:

But keep them suggestions coming.

I use full fat yogurt but enjoy that as a quick lunch with toppings. We don’t use chocolate but use nuts, goji berries, my husband likes raisins. I’ve also seen but not tried where they melt chocolate and put on top of the yogurt and let it harden.
I’ve done the chia pudding in the past but don’t love it. I do put chia seeds in my yogurt.

As much as I like and am cool with so many food things, chia seeds are off the table for me. Just don’t like them and especially the texture. Not a fan of things expanding in my food!!!

I enjoy the chia seeds just fine, but the texture of the pudding wasn’t that firm and it tasted like milk with honey, which is fine, but just not a pudding to me.

My chia puddings are approx the texture of junket, a fond memory from my childhood sick days. My next version of chia pudding will be with almond extract. Then I won’t need to shake in a jar. (Like with vanilla, I’ll stir with a fork . Then stir again a few minutes later before putting in fridge).

@abasket get it why not everybody likes chia seeds.

Gosh, I met a family that LOVED chia seeds at the bulk store. I asked what they used them in. The mother said “everything”. The teen daughter said, “yea EVERYTHING” (but in a happy way - they even make some kind of snack bar with chia seeds). They were delighted to have the option for white chia seeds as well as the traditional black, to blend in with foods better. When I checked a few years back, nutrition is same either color. I’m not picky about the appearances and always buy black, keep them in the fridge in a jar.

Thanks @Colorado_mom! I bought organic peanut butter powder (and just picked up low fat Greek yogurt) so was looking for recipes!! Will try!

While I don’t love chia seeds in smoothies (changes the texture) I did enjoy the chia pudding! I’m kind of a fan of bland things so it’s right up my alley, lol. I really like how you can add different flavors (honey, vanilla, etc.) since it’s such a neutral base. And it was nice and easy (good since I don’t generally do complicated cooking, lol).

This recipe showed up in my FB feed. It’s a little to fussy for my lazy methods… and too big a recipe for just me! (Husband is not a chocolate fan.) But thought others might like to take a peek. It includes plain greek fat free yogurt, protein powder, chocolate sugar free pudding and more.

Based on this thread got hemp hearts & more chia seeds. They are actually great sprinkled on top of my smoothie bowl (adds nice crunchy texture). Extra protein!

Thought that might help those that don’t love the expansion of chia seeds in liquid!

I have yet to try hemp hearts. But I think we have them at our bulk food store.

Another “recipe” snack pudding. Normally I buy plain greek yogurt (usually no fat or low fat). But this week I had a hankering for some Yoplait flavored yogurt, on sale. Instead of eating it at once, I had half at a time with nuts.

1/2 container of light Boston Cream Pie yogurt - 40cal
1T (or more) chopped walnuts.

I have not used protein powder but was with a friend this weekend who added peanut butter protein powder to our morning oatmeal and it was very good. Made me realize I should look into using it regularly. Thanks for all the great information on this thread.

Timely post. I saw it as I sat down to my breakfast oatmeal. Decided to try PB powder in my oatmeal - I like it

Today’s variation on my chia pudding had 1T peanut butter powder. I liked that - maybe some berries in it would be a PBJ idea. I also switched up by doing 1T chia seeds and 1T flax seeds - I liked it for a change but think most people would find it odd.
