Protocol when it comes to FA offers/bargaining

DS is down to three-four schools. Two are well-known LACs with big endowments that have been very generous with the merit/FA. One is a lesser-known uni who has given ds quite a bit of merit/FA, but the offer isn’t quite as good as the other two (which is really a problem when you look at the prestige of the other two).

The adcom from the uni e-mailed ds tonight asking him if he’s still interested (he is) and that if so he could try to get ds more money, but in order to be most effective advocating for ds it would be helpful to have details of the other offers he’s considering.

My initial thought is to just scan in the other two schools’ offers and attach them to an e-mail, but ds is concerned about protocol and whether that would break confidentiality with the other schools. What do y’all think? My feeling is why be coy with the guy; he knows he’s in the running and if knowing these other offers makes him loosen the pursestrings then OK.

Scan them, and attach it in an email. There’s no confidentiality agreement on a FA form, and if he’s serious about going to that school over the others, they’ve made it clear they’ll try to make it easier for him to go.

I would really only do this if this uni is #1 though.

^^Agree if this guy is going to go to bat then I would only do it if your son will actually go there if the offer is sweetened.

I made sure in his e-mailed response that he didn’t say he would definitely go regardless. I would be mighty surprised if this guy can meet the offer, but what do I know. He said it was in his top three.

He decided to give the guy round numbers (their COA is $$$, and they are giving me $$$ with no loans) and then said if it would help to see the specific offers he would send them as an attachment. He also asked if they could fly him up as he’s never been on campus while school is in session, another reason he won’t commit.
