Hi everyone. I was hoping someone familiar with the Providence area could be of some help. Can anyone out there address the safety factor of the airport and/or Brown University area? Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for hotels or just general information?

D2 is planning a grad school visit, but her flight does not get in until near midnight. The accomodations are at Brown University, at a hotel they operate on the top two floors of a dorm on campus. They have told her to take a taxi from the airport to the dorm. I do try and not worry :), but… Do you know how far it is from the airport to the campus or if it’s generally a safe area? (outside of ordinary precautions, of course).

TF Green is a pleasantly small airport. It should be quite easy to get a taxi from there to Brown - it’s probably a half hour or less. (Basically, I’ve used the airport and I’ve been near Brown, so I’m guessing a bit.) I think the area around Brown is reasonable too. I’m sure a grad student going from the airport to a dorm would be quite fine.

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like the Providence airport is quite different than ATL, and she should be able to navigate quite easily.

The airport is very safe and well run. She should follow the signs to the taxi pick up just outside of baggage claim. There is usually an attendant there who will help her into a cab. The ride to Providence is only about 10 minutes - the airport is right off I95 and then Brown is another five minutes from the Gano Street exit. It is an easy trip and she’ll travel through a very nice and safe part of the city - the east side of Providence. Even at midnight, the campus will be buzzing and people will coming and going from the dorms. She will be fine.

Gourmetmom - thanks so much. That’s exactly what I was trying to determine. I’ll pass the info on to D2. We don’t know anyone from RI or anyone who has even visited, so she is really looking forward to the visit. Thanks again

The area around Brown is quite lovely. Busy with students from both Brown and RISD.

That’s the impression I got from pictures on the internet. Makes me wish I was going too!

I love Providence! The area around Brown is terrific and downtown Providence has such a great vibe. I would love for my D to end up with a job or going to grad school in the area.

I have stayed at the Inn at Brown a couple of times - it is nice basic accommodations. The area where it is located is nice, and safe. On weekends, rooms facing the courtyard can be noisy at night with students milling around. Shouldn’t be a problem for your daughter’s visit.

I think that the Brown campus and the area of Providence around the campus and down to RISD is quite lovely now (compared to 20 years ago). My daughter, who graduated last year, used to walk downtown all the time, including up to Federal Hill, the Mall etc. and always felt safe. That being said, it is a small city and you do have to be aware, and like all urban campuses it is not crime-free.

Hope your daughter has a great visit.

I agree that the Brown/RISD area is quite nice. And the ride from the airport is an easy one. I hope your D enjoys her visit!

Thanks everyone for the kind and helpful comments. My daughter is definitely looking forward to seeing the Brown campus. I have passed on all the positive comments about Brown and the Providence area - hope she takes lots of pictures :)
