PSA: Easy way to get rid of flies!

Completely off-topic for college … but I just have to mention a super simple way to get rid of flies in and around the house. We’ve had a terrible time with flies here in north Georgia this year due to the warm winter and rainy summer. That led to tons of flies around. I have been killing 5-10 each day inside the house lately. Nasty. Anyway, my construction friend told me about an easy way to get rid of them. Take a “Ball” or similar jar with a metal lid. Punch holes in the lid with a screwdriver or can opener that are big enough for a fly to crawl into (say, two times the width of a fly). Put about 1/2" of beer or other tasty liquid in the jar and set it where you find flies getting into the house (the garage door for us).

In just a couple of hours there were at least a dozen flies stuck in the jar (mostly dead). Don’t do vinegar (two flies), do beer (a dozen plus).

Good tip! Who can pass up a good beer? Eons ago, we baited some traps with Rainier thinking it would be a good way of getting rid of undrinkable swill, and the slugs probably would not care! Nope. Slugs ignored Rainier. However, when we put some decent ale in those traps, slugs were fighting over it!

I use this trick for fruit flies, only I leave the jar open, and put a drop of dishwashing soap in there. The flies get in, but they don’t get out. Haven’t tried it for house flies, but we’ve had a terrible time with those here in Maine this summer.

I use cider vinegar or red wine that I don’t like…put in a bowl, add a drop of dish detergent, run fast water on top for bubbles, and set it out.

You know what they say, @droppedit – you get more flies with honey than vinegar, but you get the most with a nice cold IPA.

^ Ohhh I finally found a use for IPAs! (I hate IPA)

Kidding aside, thanks for this. The flies have been bad around here this year and I swear 10 fly in every time I open the door to let the dog out.

Definitely a good use for IPAs.
