PSA For Any Of You Living In Or Heading To SoCal

for Admitted Students Day etc., make a point of making time to head to one of the Superbloom locations; the CA Poppy Reserve is spectacular! It’s as if the mountains are ablaze! Do NOT miss this!

Thank you, this is a great idea. Do you know if they’re still likely to be blooming in mid-April? Is there a problem with crowds?

@yucca10 - the poppies are delicate and rely on weather conditions to thrive. That said Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve rangers told me they expect the bloom to last until May. Conditions are incredibly favorable right now. I took my nephew and sil 2 weeks ago. Absolutely breathtaking! The last time I saw a superbloom like this was 1992.

There have been huge problems with crowds although maybe they’re settling down now. Here’s the update from the most popular location, although they are in other places. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=627 Recommend weekday rather than weekend visit if possible.

We went to Anza Borrego a couple of weeks ago to see the desert superbloom and it was great but apparently the blooms are retreating to the upper slopes and canyons: http://www.abdnha.org/pages/03flora/reports/current.htm

I just changed my avatar to one of the ocotillo blooms.

@yucca10 Antelope Valley is ‘aflame’; apparently, if the weather conditions continue as they are…so will the poppies (until late April, mid-May’ish)

Watch for Rattlesnakes ! Until I saw one, I honestly thought it was too early in the season.
