PSA for parents: Please be sure your full address is included in all admissions correspondence

After coming back from grocery shopping yesterday, I found the postal service left a package from UChicago’s undergrad admissions outside my apartment door addressed “to the parents of a certain college applicant”. While I am one of few Chinese-Americans in the building and the surname was also Chinese in origin, our surnames are as completely different as Smith from Jones.

While I understand the postperson only had the address of the building without a specified apartment, I found it odd he/she decided to drop it off at my apartment door. Especially considering it would have been much easier for him/her to drop the package off with the super or in a clearly designated spot for incompletely addressed mail right next to the mailboxes. Worse, there doesn’t seem to be anyone with the surname on the addressed package listed anywhere in my building directory or among the mailboxes.

In short, when corresponding with admission offices, it is best if they have your full address, including any apartment numbers to facilitate prompt delivery of correspondence to you/your student.
