If you are a veteran, you can now shop online at the PX (post exchange, base exchange, navy exchange). The website is shopmyexchange.com. The law was changed last veterans day. You can’t go on post to shop. when you go to the website, there is a banner, “Welcome home Veterans, Veteran online shopping benefit.” Click the banner, then click the “Get verified” button, you will be taken to a site where your SSN will be requested. Your information will be checked to verify you served. If verified, you can set up your account.
Also, all veterans can join USAA, an insurance company and bank. USAA used to only be open to officers. in the mid 90s they included enlisted service members who were currently serving. A couple years ago, they included all veterans who had served.
My dad was in the military for under a year. He qualified for USAA and insured his golf clubs for a year for a minimal premium. That allowed me and my kids and H to get USAA. We got USAA auto insurance for S as well as getting the USAA cashback 2.5% credit card. I’m not sure whether any of my siblings plan to get USAA coverage as well.
I just closed my father’s USAA account and was informed that all of my siblings can join and my mother gets some survivor benefits like financial planning.
@twoinanddone, forgot to include the children of USAA members can become USAA members. I got my uncle to join who is in his late 60s as he didn’t know he could join. Now my cousins are members.
Failed to get a friends dad to join as he was happy with his insurance, and my friend really wanted to get USAA insurance.
If you can get the person to join and just buy a one year small policy to cover something inexpensive like a set of golf clubs, the premium in small and opens the door to lots of folks related to the insured being able to get benefits. My relative insured his golf clubs and his kids and grandkids could thereafter be members and get insurance, credit cards and other benefits.
