PSA: Today is the deadline

Today, Oct. 9, is the deadline to register to vote in 18 states. Please encourage students to register and participate in democracy.

Also encourage them to request absentee ballots if they are out of state for the election.

They may be able to vote early if they are coming home for break and the state offers early voting. That’s what my girls are doing.

We are hand-carrying our students’ voter registration applications to our clerk this afternoon (I work at a grad school). Our students are NOT like those on the Today Show piece this morning (if you saw that … it was pretty sad).

Tell everyone you know to check their voter status even if they think they’re registered. Lots and lots of people have been unknowingly kicked from rolls.

@kelsmom, can you expand on that? I went to the Today Show web site and didn’t see anything about young voters.

In the Gallup poll released September 27, 2018, 82% of those over 65 said they were certain they would vote this year, compared to just 26% of those aged 18-29. Please remind the young adults you know of the importance of voting.

Man, that is depressing.

My college student is a Christian anarchist who thinks voting is inherently evil because it is participating in a violent system. Yeah, Oberlin.

The rest of us are registered and will vote.

The UC Irvine video is especially depressing because CA-45, where UCI is located, is actually a competitive House district. There aren’t that many competitive House districts in California, so those students have a chance to make a difference.

In most elections the UCSB students do a good job of getting out the vote there. Not sure why UCI should be different.

Many states will be having Election Day registration. So those who miss the voter registration deadline can register…and vote on Election Day in those states. Check your state for details.

You will need the same identification and proof of residency that you need to register at any other time.

Please…get registered…and vote.

As a counter, UMich students are fired up and heavily engaged.

If I was at a random bus stop and some reporter came up to ask me, I might also say “no” or ignore them because I have zero interest in talking on camera.
