PSAT 2011 Wednesday Answer Thread

if three’s not an answer then isn’t the question wrong. What combination of values could there be for x and y where x/y is not greater than 0?

III. (x/y) < 0

Really, really, reallllly sure it was x/y > 1.
D:

For the controversial math question, my form was:

If x<y<0, then which of the following MUST be true:

I. x+1<y+2 ←="" it="" was="" x+1="" ii.="" 3x<2y="" iii.="" (x="" y)="">1</y+2>

They’re all true.
I. x will always be less than y, and adding more to y than to x will yield an even greater disparity between x and y, with y still being the greater own.
If x=-2 and y=-1, x<y because -2<-1. ∴ x+1<y+2 because -1<1.

II. The same logic applies.

III. Both of numbers, x and y, must be negative, so their quotient must be positive. x<y<0, so="" |x|="" |y|="">1. ∴ x/y>1 ∵ the |x|/|y| must be greater than one and x/y must be positive.</y<0,>

so, how lenient or strict do you guys think the curve will be this year?

Alright. I’m going to hang on the belief that for some reason different states had slightly different answers on that one, or something like that, or people are just remembering it wrong.

I did mess up stupidly on two other math problems, but I can’t believe that I would not only miss an answer choice when looking over the answers, but read one of the portions of the question not only with a wrong sign, but with one side of an inequality wrong. And then in addition people are arguing about whether it was +1, +2, or +3 for I. I specifically remember thinking “Well if X < Y, then obviously X+2 < Y+2 since the 2s can be cancelled out.”

I probably got it wrong though. :(

^ Exactly III is false in that instance and wouldn’t be an answer.

Does anyone remember that one question where the isosceles triangle was inside the right triangle, or something like that? Does anyone remember their answer to it?

^^ It was 11. The perimeter of the right triangle was 24, so the sides of the isosceles triangle had to 11-11-2. You only could have integers, so 2 is the smallest number you could use, and arrangement such as 22-1-1 are not even triangles.

nvm 10char

i think hes referring to the one where “x” was an angle value.
answer was 15

It was 15.

^ Alright thanks, I got that too.

Oh yeah, it was x+1<y+2, because I remember distinctly thinking, “Hahahaha well obviously x is always going to be less, DUH!” because the proctor saw me smirking and decided to walk over to see what I was doing.

My proctor did give a $#¡¢ when people were giggling and cheating.

there was some pretty distracting music playing in my room the entire time… will college board let me retake :D

^ Sure, they’ll make a special test for you… extra spicy lol

I’m still a little worried about not getting a 230 (I know, so typical of a CC’r), but I honestly want that score just so my parents will shut up about it. Washington’s cutoff is so high D: 220, seriously?!

Funniest part of today was a really snobby girl telling me, “Hey, you’re smart, what does channel mean?” That, and the tennis team lost half of their players.

There was a fan blowing directly on my legs for Section 1; it was so distracting and probably part of the reason I did so poorly on that section. I thought channel was an easy word. I am still upset about not knowing the metaphorical meaning of elephantine– and picking the wrong answer– and getting the librarian thing wrong when I knew all of the words. My parents don’t care, so long as I get the Merit Scholarship, which I don’t have to worry about next year.

Got two questions wrong on math…I hate my life. I mean now that I know how to do them, I can’t believe I didn’t get them. Those two questions could have raised my 72 to an 80 (assuming I got the rest of them right), adding 8 FREAKING points to my overall score. Bye NMSF…■■■.

There was a teacher proctoring my exam. No wonder I sucked at the CR part so bad.
