PSAT and SAT score

My son did PSAT at school as a sophomore. 90 percentile in math but 60 percentile in verbal.

How much of an improvement can be made with practice on verbal score? Curious to hear about peoples experiences. How did they go about it. He is considering doing Acely.

Is putting in time to improve SAT score worth it given how many colleges are test optional? What kind of improvements can be made and how much effort is required.

Or is he better off putting that time into another AP class.

I’d recommend studying (w/ tutoring if affordable) over the summer and taking an SAT in early fall of jr. year. You can then assess the improvement, take additional tests, and/or decide whether he will go TO. I think that significant improvement is possible.

TO does not mean test not valued.

Probably not, especially if it’s to go from 5 to 6 AP’s and the additional class is non-core.

And really you and your son need to review realistic options, because your expectations across several threads are all over the board. Wishing and hoping is not an effective strategy. For your son’s sake, help the kid you have, not the kid you wish you had

Not sure how much has changed since this data - but it is college board data on how much kids normally move from PSAT to SAT and when they take it, I found it super interesting!

You could also have your student try a sample ACT test. Some students do better than one rather than the other.
