PSAT anxiety

I made a thread regarding a similar topic, but my questions weren’t answered. I think this is a more appropriate forum:

Here are my stats:

3.8 GPA/3.7 unweighted

Only 3 APs offered at my school and I’m taking two (the other is Cal).
No honors offered.
1 college class
Completed 1 non A-G class online and enrolled in an independent math program.

Scores:

~145-150 PSAT

23% math, 70% reading, 60% critical

I was pretty disappointed about my English score, as I consider that to be my strongest subject.

Many of my friends have taken the PSAT several times (some since 8th grade) so I feel a little disadvantaged, but I know that isn’t a really good excuse.

Questions:

What are my chances at the above colleges?

I plan on enrolling in one-on-one SAT prep during the summer, but how far will that improve my score? My PSAT projects a 1400 SAT, I’d need at least 1n 1800 to be considered at any of those schools. Can I truly expect a 400+ point increase?

In addition to one-on-one SAT prep, what other methods of studying should I pursue? I see a billion self-help books but I can’t choose. Obviously my major weakness is math, so If I can bump that to a 60 I could manage a 1800+.

How much time do I have before the SAT? What is the latest I could possibly take it before apps are due? I plan on taking it more than once…

Is it true you can’t cancel your scores after knowing what you got? I hear you only have 5 days after testing to cancel…

And lastly - how many times can I take the SAT? I know the SAT sign up is weird. If I want to take it more than twice, don’t I need to apply before my first exam?
Do I sign up for the SAT now?

My school sucks in terms of testing advice so this forum is basically a last resort.

I just need some encouragement and possibly a realistic opinion.

Thanks!!!

What above colleges?

Oops - that was meant for a different thread. Disregard that question.

Not sure what you mean by “How much time do I have before the SAT?” You can take the test year round, except during the summer.

1.- n/a
2.- This was answered on your other thread.
3.- Look up the Ziggy Method here on CC.
4.- Traditionally, people have taken the SAT late in their Jr year and then again early Sr year. If you look at the SAT/ACT threads that’s not the case anymore. People seem to be taking all the time. The latest is usually January of your Sr year (but you can always ask the school you are interested in what’s their policy).
5.- I think you can cancel your test for a limited time after you take it, but I don’t think you can cancel after you get your scores (if you took advantage of the college reporting service they would get the scores at the same time you do).
lastly.- You can take it as many times as you want, but from what I see in CC, more than 4 doesn’t look good. There is a new option available next year where you can send only one score. Don’t know exactly how that works.

You have your work cut out for you. Work hard. Good luck.

Wait, I’m confused. I won’t be taking the SAT senior year?

By how much time, I mean how much time do I have to take the SAT before college apps are due. I don’t under this fall/spring dates. Are we talking about fall of senior year or after?

Ok, a little more info on the study help.

I found the official SAT study guide at collegeboard:
[SAT Preparation Center | Practice with Official SAT Test Prep Questions](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools)

Is this the right one? Won’t I need something else as well? I really NEED help with math so a SAT book with heavy emphasis on that would be beyond helpful.

English is doable.

So, finally - how much time should I put into studying? From what I understand, I’ll be taking the SAT next January at the earliest - correct? (I would like to know what is the latest). Do I study 1 hour day, 20 mins, more on weekends…?

I’m particularly concerned about what materials I should be studying. I’ll get the college prep book, but I see dozens of kids with far more stuff than that. What is right for me?

thanks!

Also, I’m really confused about this: Whenever searched for the term you suggested, many people said practicing only increased their score about 10 or so points. Is this extrapolated into a larger number of is this seriously 10 of 2400???

I’d need at least a 400 point increase minimal, is this a realistic goal or should I start planning my funeral?

wrong thread

i think you can expect an increase…idk how far but…i think with some self-dedication you could get 600’s on each easily…especially with the help of a tutor

apparently the official SAT book by the collegeboard will help

dont understand your question…look at all the dates the collegeboard says you can take the test and all the dates your colleges have deadlines for reporting scores

true…although i think there might be a new policy allowing only the sat tests you want to be sent to be sent…

collegeboard.com has the deadlines for when to register…you can take it as many times as you want…but it will cost money and if colleges require to see all your tests you shouldn’t take it more than 4 times…3 is really considered a lot.

to follow up…if you’re smart and quick…i think just mastering practice tests over and over and understanding every type of question will get you far…you can increase your score as much as you practice to increase it. work in=score out

You don’t really need to study during the school year unless you are pressed for time. Simply study during the summer, like most other juniors do. Plus, how do you manage to have an extra hour and 20 minutes per day? Seems a little overwhelming to me. Seems like you have extra time on your hands to take that 3rd AP…
