**PSAT Discussion Thread 2015**

Just out of curiosity, does anyones score report actually show 99.5%?

@hopeforthebest82 I got through and was told there must be something off between the the test and the CB account and that’s why we have to wait for a code. I have two sons that took the PSAT this year and both are having the same problem! Was told to monitor both boys email accounts through Saturday. UGH!!! Like I have nothing better to do than go through my boys emails for 3 days!

Back when the scores were due mid Dec and then they changed the release date to Jan. 7 I was ASSURED that I would have the scores on Jan 7th and now they tell me I may have to until SAT Jan 9 which really means MON Jan 11th since I’m sure they’ll be closed for the weekend.

@mathyone Here’s a strawman proposal to do this. Suppose we take the 2015 data. For each state we multiply the cutoff score (aka that States 99% number) x (number of students who made it from that State). If we add these totals all up and divide by the total number of kids, do we get (roughly) the 99% cutoff for the Nation?

@3scoutsmom Ugh, so sorry to hear about your troubles.
Well, we are here till September.

Do you think a 215 will be enough in Minnesota?

See if your guidance counselor/testing coordinator can help get somewhere.

@3scoutsmom I’m right there with ya. My D has not received an email yet. I’m going to wait until tomorrow and if nothing, I will send an email to her GC. Not sure if this is an option for you?

Thread for commended speculation http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-act-tests-test-preparation/1849731-psat-national-merit-commended.html#latest

Above was for IAmNotCreativ
just for reference

@3scoutsmom the college board is super obnoxious, I tweet them about the problem then they say to call, then when I call it goes straight to voicemail saying to call back later,

Anyone else have unexpected results?
My daughter is all math and only received a 560!? English is really not her strong suit and she has a 620.
She did a bit better on her sophomore year PSAT, but I guess she is just not a good test-taker.

She’s taking the last, old version of the SAT in a couple of weeks. She’s pretty disappointed.

@payn4ward we aren’t in it for national merit we we need those scores NOW. We need PSAT scores for my 8th grader for application for an honor society that was due before the first of the year AND it’s required for his high school application. My older son,10th grader, will be taking the March 5th new SAT and every day the CB delays his PSAT score is one less day for the “personalized study” from Khan that the CB has been touting…

@huskyfever, is she calculator dependent? I tutor a lot of students for the math portion of these and other tests (ACT/etc), and many of those students will not do well on that calculator free part.

Is 218 selection index enough for Semi-finalist in Ohio?

@drshoema, I don’t see the point of what you are proposing.

Look at how many kids got a selection index last year or 224 or above (if you can find that info). Now divide that number by the total number of test takers. That tells you what national percentile you needed to be in if you lived in New Jersey, to make NMSF last year. Repeat 50 times and make us a chart. This gives you some idea of the percentiles needed in each state.

But keep in mind that NMSF is working with scores, not percentiles when they make this designation. They can’t include some kids who got a 224 and exclude others who also got 224 just to hit a target number of 1000 NMSF in a particular state. Depending exactly how many kids are in that group on the edge, the number of NMSF has to bounce up and down each year in each state. I don’t know how much this affects the percentiles from year to year. You’d have to look at a few years to get an idea.

@drshoema. So if the 1% cutoff this year is about 210 and in prior years it was 215, it seems like it would be a reasonable to estimate the cutoff for each state as prior year - 5.

@huskyfever

I thought I had gotten a perfect score on math but ended up missing a lot
Was very surprised

The only problem with that @randomletter is that the 99th percentile has actually bounced around from a low of 211 to a high of 215 in the past 10 years or so. It’s a decent starting place for speculation though. Remember, most states don’t have cuts right at the 99th. You need to look at your state specific history as well when making predictions. Sadly, a bubble kid will end up being a bubble kid right up to the day the cut is confirmed, which won’t be until early September.

No scores. And the site once we log in says no record of my daughter testing. Its my DD’s first time taking PSAT And my DD’s school has not received anyone’s scores from CB so can’t get access code. The GC in charge of testing called CB today and was told that our school will receive scores in several weeks. I think our school doesn’t know of or refuses to use the electronic scoring available?? Could CB really be delaying the school’s scores that long?

@PAMom21, she did better on the math portion last year and didn’t even bring a calculator to that test.
She just started AP Calculus this semester and I’m thinking she didn’t review enough Algebra from 7th and 8th grade. Could that be it?
