**PSAT Discussion Thread 2015**

honestly everyone’s in gray area right now IMO. people can make predictions all they want but nothing will be definite until September

Thank you, hope so. I agree with you: the selection should be based on national.

@websensation Haha Im about to go to NY and slap the Collegeboard CEO if it comes out to be 221 lmao

@chyaboi123 Slap the CEO several times for us. Lol

@VandyAlum93 – I’ll weigh in on the “verbal” vs. math debate although I wouldn’t call my feelings strong. Primarily, I would argue that the one thing that no one has touched on is that the reading and writing sections test different skills and that may be why they should be scored and weighted separately. Many people approach this as if the ability to use a semicolon and a big vocabulary are being weighted over math skills. Reading comprehension of complex material/the ability to read closely is just as important for STEM students as their math skills(with the possible exception of kids who plan to do just coding or the theoretical side of math).

If you look at the research, the most important skill that both employers and academics want to see from college students is critical reasoning. Math skills do not necessarily translate to critical thinking skills, although a logical mind always helps. Some of the changes to the PSAT/SAT are supposed to be designed to measure the ability to assess and analyze evidence and most of those questions are from the reading section. Look at the cross scoring; there’s a lot more going on than just what we think of as “verbal” skills. There were a lot of high “writing” kids who had serious difficulties with the reading section because it really doesn’t reward the same skill set.

In addition, the ACT seems also to take this approach (separate reading and writing scores, along with a “science” score that really tests analysis more than actual science knowledge). When you think about it, the ACT (which so many CC’ers seem to think superior to SAT) actually only makes math a quarter of the averaged composite. In that context, College Board and National Merit SC actually place more weight on Math than the ACT folks.

As an aside, the whole “they double the verbal to make sure there are enough girls in NM” explanation was considered mostly an urban myth back when I took the PSAT in 1980 (I was a math girl and absolutely wanted math to count more). There is a math gender gap, but it is fairly modest and certainly not enough to warrant doubling of one section.

Wow, that was long-winded. Sorry about that, I’ve already spent too much time on this to edit it down.

@websensation Ill hug him though if its 219 or 220 though lol

Back to TASP, wonder if anybody who got emails from them, but didn’t do as well in the test in 2015 PSAT Or vice versa. Thanks! I am sorry if I missed this discussion from pages I didn’t read.

I’m a sophomore from Indiana with a 1350 (36 Reading, 37 Writing, and 31 Math) with a SI 208. Did I have a higher SI than what was projected because Reading and Writing is weighted higher? If Indiana’s cutoff last year was 215, will it be lower this you? thank you!

@higheredrocks My son made a 700v,710m. My sophomore daughter made 750v,590m. He has a 211 and she is 209. All the math whizzes at my son’s school are boys.

@3scoutsmom so sorry to hear this. I wonder what happened…think they owe you more information so you can make an informed decision.
@Dave_N – my DD had a perfect Math score so go figure…her SI came down (think it was the writing section) to a 220.

221 SI here didn’t receive TASP (1480)

1440 M750 R690 R36 W33 M37.5 with an SI of 213 in AZ. honestly my score has been haunting me so much because of my writing and how my math did nothing. Honestly, without optimism, do you guys think that’s good enough, grey area, danger zone, or not enough? I know no one knows for sure but I’d like some opinions.

@jjlundy , which state?

What is TASP?

@higheredrocks _ I was a really math girl and am still teaching Math in higher education institution.
I don’t want to argue this issue however I think you’d better read a short report from CB.

@3scoutsmom Good Grief!!!

@rooster2017 here’s the link on another thread - #219:

@sincererlove GA

@3scotsmom, what a nightmare! I hope things get resolved for you soon!

No TASP here they dont love me

You don’t have to worry. 220 will easily make the cut in any state. Unlike in the past, when some states had cutoffs as high as 224 (for DC last year; CA was 222), the new cutoff will be as much as 12 points lower (corresponding to the difference between the maximum now of 228 vs the previous maximum of 240). Some people are guessing that it won’t be that much lower, but assuming at least 4 points is pretty conservative.
