I think it just takes a while for some schools to receive and react to the notifications. I know my son made semi-finalist based on the scores posted here but the school has yet to say anything. I talked to his GC last night and she didn’t mention it but she said they were already ‘swamped’ with working with the seniors on the college application process. I’m assuming it either hasn’t reached the appropriate desk yet or they are waiting to announce it at the weekly school assembly before they tell the parents. They often do that with big awards/recognitions.

Schools are highly variable with notification, but if you or your student has not received the package by the end of the month you should do some serious investigation. Included in the package is the application for Finalist, which will need to be completed and mailed by the school along with their recommendation and transcript by the stated deadline.

So if I missed the cut I just get commended?

Yepper. That’s right.

Letters were distributed at S2’s HS today. 218 did NOT make the cut in Maryland.

FP9 - don’t say “just” commended. It’s still a GREAT job, and congratulations are in order. I know how one might feel because there is a lot at stake, but - top 3.33% (ish). WELL DONE YOU!

Here’s a thought (And I’m just SURE the National Merit Corp is losing sleep worrying about what I think).

With all the hubbub about state cut-offs and whether or not it is fair…(my state is very mid-pack, and D would have made it in all states based on last years’ stats so I’m not biased either way)…

…What if there were NATIONAL Merit Semi finalists and STATE semi finalists? The top 50,000 commended would still be culled as they are now.

Then the top 8,000 based solely on score would be considered National. The next 8,000 are chosen the way they do now, using the remaining top scores in each state.

That would serve to slightly minimize the discrepancy of a 219 in New Jersey not making the cut when a 203 in a less populated state does make the cut.

Nothing’s perfect, and there will always be someone who just doesn’t quite squeak in based on the calculation used; but…all states would still be represented, regardless of their educational opportunities.

I know, just a way to make it more complicated. I’m sure they’ve considered this (for fifty years!) and there is some reason why. There has to be a cut off somewhere. Just thinking “out loud”.

I received an email response today from GC at our Public HS in Texas stating that notification to NM SemiFinalists would not be made until mid- next week. Perhaps this is the norm in Texas as this thread has had only a couple of folks reporting receipt of packages. Of course my son is on the fence with a 215. Any other data points out there?

treemaven: indiana’s cutoff was 212 this year, a point less than previous years

Updated with Indiana being changed to 212 as per post # 532. Need to confirm if this is cut off point.

UT never had that great of a scholarship for national merit, especially compared to other schools. It was usually only about $2000 to $4000. Arizona State and University of Oklahoma offer full ride (tuition, books, room, board, plus extra) for National Merit.

It’s official, texas NMS is 216. I missed it by 1 point

Official. Cutoff for Missouri is 211. Tied with Kansas. Darn those jayhawks.
