I can confirm that 205 did get NMSF in Mississippi. I don’t know what the cut off is but daughter found out today from the counselor that she’s in w/ 205.

Sorry for those in other states w/ higher scores that didn’t make it. I truly feel for you. We’re not giving it back, though. :)

God bless and I hope for good news for all of you still waiting.

Can some please at least put “disputed” in parenthesis next to Florida along with the relevant post numbers? People should be able to judge for themselves since we don’t have any concrete evidence either way. I think it’s a good idea to be conservative and not give people the impression they are NMSF if that is not the case but augustagurrl’s post (327) seems credible, since it appears she was personally notified by her guidance counselor and noreally’s friend (534) also claimed this happened to her, so someone is very confused. Since the scores in the state went down from last year, a score of 211 or 210 would seem to be consistent with the data that was released.

Deac re #607 - I am happy for your daughter, and am posting to say what a nice message you posted - thank you! we are still waiting but meanwhile best of luck!!

Congrats to deac from your neighbors in Louisiana. Our cutoff was 207. We wish so much that it would have been lower, as many friends just missed it. Thought for sure we’d be in that boat, as we were blessed that it went down a point from last year.

I too feel so sorry for those kids in the states with over 220 cutoffs. Heck, even those with cutoffs over 210. They must have phenomenol schools in those states.

Good luck to all!

Delaware was 219 last year. Not sure about this year, as I haven’t gone back to school yet. But I wonder if our high cut-off score is due to the small population = <1% sliver being the very tippy-top.

Are the guidence counselors really told what the cutoff scores are or do they come up with the cutoff scores by who makes semifinalist and who doesn’t? I sure hope Florida is below 212 but if it isn’t, that’s life.

kindredspirit@#600: The NMSC has a pdf on their website that describes in detail the rules of the NMS game, as well as important cutoff dates not to miss. As of today the new year update is not out yet, but last year is, and I doubt it has changed much. Highly recommended reading for all students and parents. The upcoming date you should keep in mind is NMSC receipt of the completed NMS app by student and school by ~Oct 12th.

To all candidates: do not choose a school of first choice until you are clear what restrictions and obligations this entails. My two children are NMS this year, and they will choose ‘undecided’ until very late in the process.

Cheers everybody!

The cutoffs are not “released” to guidance counselors but it is possible to determine the cutoff for a given state if a 210 gets semi sstatus and a 209 does not. Thus, I stand by what I said with the Florida cutoff: a 210 from my school received semi status.

Hi.
Our child scored a 213 in Vermont and was told by his school that he is a semi-finalist.

Im a 209 from Fl, and I still havent heard from my school. However, I did get a call from the University of Houston telling me that if i qualify for NMF I get a full ride to their university. Did any1 else get this call?

My S scored a 210 in Fl and did not qualify. Two other students with higher scores have already recieved news that they quailfied. One student was pulled out of the same class my S was in and given the news.

Is there any possibility here of confusion between National Merit and National Achievement in some of the states with apparently inconsistent information?
