PSAT takers recieving too many college recruiting emails/mails from same universities, WHY?

My Junior D is receiving too many college recruiting emails and mails from same universities. What’s the point and how many emails/mails is too many? Please list your universities…

Baylor (20+)
Northeastern (15+)
SMU(10+)
UChicago(5+)

Some colleges send little postcards often. Others will send a single large packet. If your child, clicked on an email or expressed interest you might receive more. This process will go in waves. You might get a box full of college stuff one week and then nothing for a month.

Omg I’ve gotten at least 20 pieces of mail from different universities in the past four days. It’s way too much. On top of that, they’re SPAMMING my email. I’ve gotten 50 plus emails in the past two weeks.

It’s normal. They’re doing it to try to recruit you. I have a full cardboard box of mail from various colleges (from just 2nd semester of my junior year and the summer after that) and my inbox is probably 60% college promotional emails (about 10-20 per day after I took the PSAT and they’re still coming now even though I’ve already sent in my apps). I’ve found that if you delete them without reading (for the ones you are not interested in) they eventually send them less often and sometimes they’ll end up in spam.

The kid signed up for it. No sign up, no mail (from that particular source)

They can always use an email filter if it’s a school they never would consider.

My kid is a senior NMF and is still getting wooing letters and postcards from schools.

I do think it’s interesting to see which schools are sending mail though. We are in the Midwest and have received nothing from Northeastern, SMU, or Baylor. Definitely getting hit up by UChicago but, otherwise, our mailings seem to be one/two from a school. S19 has a 221 so will hopefully be NMF if our state’s cut off does not change. The emails aren’t a big deal as most go to his spam. The mailers (while a waste of money) are fun to see and we’ve actually added two schools to his list after receiving look books from them. Right now, though, the list is pretty set so I don’t think any more mailers will make a difference.

Unsubscribe. Also, go to SAT site, log into your account and choose to remove yourself from mailings.

This won’t stop all mailings, but will ebb the flow. Mailings are a waste!

Use the mail for campfire!

The mailings are a big marketing campaign, and are sent to almost everyone and anyone - even if your child could not get in. Here’s why:

  1. They want you to apply. The more applicants the more money. Applications are usually $75-100 each. Think about how much money these schools make off application fees.
  2. The more applicants, the more they reject, the more selective the said college looks! Every college loves to tout each year the "rise" in applications and a "record" number of applicants. The more who apply for the same spots year over year - the lower their acceptance rates goes.
  3. They want you to apply - because some of the US and World rankings are in fact on "selectivity" - how many applicants and how many they could accept.

It is that easy. These colleges have massive marketing budgets and they send out all this stuff (flyers, glossy postcards, envelopes, emails) to any and all kids that check the box on the PSAT. Don’t be fooled. At first it seems like an honor…and then after it gets annoying
