So I just got the acceptance email to PSE and am wondering if I want to do it. There seem to be some amazing Freshman seminars out there that would be more interesting for me. Given that I am in PSE, can I enter in the FS pool and then do PSE if I don’t get anything I like.

Could someone describe their PSE experience? Did you like it? I was emailing with previous PSE students and they split opinions between worthless, okay, and a great opportunity.

There’s another thread about PSE you can check. But in short, if you know exactly what you want your PhD in, PSE won’t help you. It’s literally a taste of EVERYTHING out there. Most likely won’t find many of the papers/topics interesting.

But, it’s a personal choice. If you want to learn about the entire scientific field, then go ahead and take it. Since you’re in, you might as well just shop it and then decide.

I heard that I would be discriminated against in the FS pool if I am in PSE. Does that mean enrolled in PSE or simply accepted? I have my eye on a handful of specific, albeit very popular, freshman seminars that I would like to get into.

I’m not sure. I’m sure if you’re not going to take PSE and drop out of it when you sign up for FS, you should be fine. If you do plan on going ahead with it, your chances of getting into a FS do go down.

The freshman seminars for this coming year haven’t been posted online yet, so they might differ from the ones available last year or in previous years.

^Yes, but if you’re in DS or PSE, your chances of getting a FS does go down. They want to make sure as many freshmen get a small class experience as possible.
