Congrats to all the Christmas acceptances! So happy for the students and families!
Would have been nice to hear back, since we have been waiting patiently since September 1st! So much for rolling admissions, it’s frustrating to know we got everything together to be first on line, so to speak, only to see others applying after Thanksgiving getting in, while we wait. Only thing rolling about these admissions is my daughter’s eyes rolling when I tell her what’s going on. Going to be a long holiday break in our neck of the woods.
@leapie45 We are in the same situation, and my S said just yesterday that he wishes he would hear back from PSU one way or another. I think we feel it more since we both applied in early Sept.- but if you read back there are several last year applications in the same situation that did not hear until the last week in Jan. I truely believe the applications are looked at in random order. I bought a PSU sweatshirt back in Oct- with the hopes of giving it to him under the tree. But of course people are wearing shorts today in PA, everything happens for a reason. Time to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Lord and Savior and be thankful for what we have in life. Bless all of you!
@Leapie45 – I hear ya! We have been waiting since September 5. I am not a fan of rolling admissions at all because it is clearly random. I think colleges should go back to the old model and tell everyone on March 1 – same day for everyone. We would save a lot of time in my house if we weren’t checking portals and waiting for the mailman.
(Good luck to your D!)
Thankfully, we heard last week. But, my daughter & I were resigned to the fact that we would not hear anything until end of Jan. I also believe unless you are a top stat applicant…its a luck of the draw. I do believe (comparing to last years thread) that applications are being reviewed quicker this year.
@crazycat220 We also wanted to pick up clothes earlier when we saw them. But, were afraid to “jinx it”. The week before my daughter got accepted she went on a 2nd tour with my Mom. She said their were so many things at the stores downtown that she wanted to get. But, was afraid to.
@coco2222 I don’t want to give you wrong information so I won’t comment on your chance because youre right on the border that’s all I can tell u. penn state makes a huge deal on gpa which may be a problem for you but your sat might be able to save you. I’d say your 50/50
What time does the portal refresh?
@Leapie45 I hear you…last year my daughter waited just about as long as you can…Sept 2-January26th. She got in though, and now she’s there and no one knows who got in first, or last. They are all there together! And while PSU calls it rolling admission, that’s because there is no other word for it. They don’t do the drop dead notification dates like some other schools and they do let people know on a rolling basis…it’s just not first in first out. They never say that it is. All they say is that if you apply by Nov 30 you hear by Jan 31st. And that’s true. But I know the frustration. I was so hoping last year my D would hear before Christmas but we waited another whole month after that. It was brutal. Especially because it was her only choice. She applied to one other school to make me happy but she wasn’t going there. It was PSU…either main campus or a commonwealth campus. She did get in to UP for summer and it’s been an amazing and great experience. Just remember that the wait is long, but then all of the sudden it’s august and you are saying goodbye to your kid. Enjoy the time they are home, even if you are waiting…because the rest just goes by too darn fast.
@jlhpsu hey random question based off your other thread where you posted class of 2019 stats but why do you think the scores dropped so drastically? The average sat dropped a 100 points that’s a pretty big change. Also when you said geographical location was considered you think it benefited in state or out of state?
@asaberian My only guess as far as SAT scores go is that since GPA is 2/3 of the decisions, the GPA and rigor of coursework was most important and the test scores less so - so people with rigorous classes and higher GPA’s could have somewhat lower SAT scores and still get in.
As far as in state vs OOS, I’m not sure which one it benefits. In other years, it was not a factor whatsoever in decisions. Now, it is but I’m not sure which way. 40% of freshmen this incoming year were OOS. 60% in state. Again, not sure how to interpret that. I know they want to have a diverse student group and students from all states and international, so perhaps certain states it matters and others it doesn’t.
Amen. Their definition of rolling is a cruel joke for all us applicants. Tired of waiting. Accepted Ivy League engineering offer. I can imagine how they run other programs and official business. Happy Holiday for everyone Waiting For Godot. In the story, Godot never comes … Like a PSU rolling admission acceptance!
Isn’t it your siblings that applied, snarkyboy? Why are you whining so much about a wait that isn’t even yours?
You should all look up the definition of rolling admission. They say they do a modified rolling admission. It’s on their web site. Modified as to not be a true rolling admission. False statement on their part. Terribly misleading at best.
actually @snarkyboy The fact that it IS on their website that they say it’s a modified rolling admission, means that it’s not typical rolling admission. They also CLEARLY post the dates on their website which I’ve posted here for you a few times. Opposite of misleading. But you definitely have trouble listening to others and following logic. If you don’t like Penn State, move along. Make room for others who really want to go here. It’s interesting if you (or your siblings?) got into an Ivy - you haven’t posted one thing on CC not related to PSU. Good luck to you (or your siblings?) at the Ivy? But since you (or your siblings) aren’t going to PSU, there is really no reason to visit this page and stir the pot for absolutely no reason.
