PSU Class of 2020 Decision Thread

@newyorkerr98 how did your interview go?

@crazycat220, @JGCStation:your child should apply to Schreyer ASAP. They don’t need to be admitted to PSu in order to do so - only to have submitted their application (by nov 30).

To everyone who is applying or interested in the Schreyer Honors College … I had my interview today!

It was a casual interview ( 30 ish minutes long ) with an alum. My interviewer actually had my application on her laptop and asked about 5-10 questions.

My suggestions:

  • definitely know why you want to go to Penn State | Honors
  • how would you excel at Penn State and in the future
  • master the “Tell me about yourself” question
  • be prepared with questions!!!

Don’t sweat it. It was a very relaxed interview and you will all be amazing!

Thanks @jlhpsu!

Honors college essays are tough. Though I have been advised by many seniors to pay utmost attention on essays, I am still struggling I guess. Anyone who hasent yet applied to honors and still completing essays?

@bilal11 me, still trying to write the essays for honors college

Hoping for some more action next week with updates - good luck to everyone still in the waiting period! Each day past is a day closer, right?

My son was accepted back in December, got email to interview for Schreyer, had his interview before Christmas. Interview went extremely well, he’s hopeful for acceptance in March to Schreyer. Good luck to those waiting, it’s extremely competitive, his brother is in SHC and loves it.

Okay, so my mom received an email from “Penn State Parents” talking about their different programs the school has for current students at UP. I haven’t gotten accepted to UP yet. Do you think that PSU accepted me, but just hasn’t officially released it yet?

No she is just on a email list for advertisement purposes

@qwertyuiopp1 No, that is just a newsletter that goes out to people who’s e mail address they have. She may have signed up or shown interest at one point. And also, that goes to ANY PSU parent that signs up, not just UP parents.

I applied to Penn State Main around November 15, and I have yet to hear back. I applied for the Biomedical Engineering program and am worried that I may have gotten accepted into a different campus because my stats aren’t too great. I have a ridiculous amount of extra curriculars, a 3.4 gpa (keep in mind that I have taken 7 honors courses and 6 APs) and my highest score without superscoring the SATs is a 1720. I also have leadership positions. My grades aren’t as high as they could’ve been because my parents got a divorce my freshman going into sophmore year, and I suffer from depression. I mentioned my parents’ divorce in my essay, but I’m not sure if that translated into “this is why my grades aren’t superb”.If I call and ask to do the summer start, will it change the fact that I’m supposed to hear back by January 30, and what do you think my chances are?

@c0llegeb0und77 At this point you should be ok to call and ask to change to summer start as an option and I’d even put in changing to DUS rather than engineering. It’s far less competitive and you can still work on engineering classes in DUS. It won’t put you behind at all, if they allow for the change. I do not think a 3.4 and a 1720 will get you into engineering at UP in the fall.

Hi, I’ve applied for Smeal Finance last month (Dec) and looking at stats of the people who are accepted, I’m really regretting not applying by the priority deadline.

Didn’t spend much time on the essay after hearing that Penn State makes decisions based mostly on scores; ACT helped compensate for mediocre GPA.
