PSU Class of 2021 Decision Thread

I changed my major recently and got into UP. I went there recently for accepted students day and they ensured me that I will have no problem switching my major as long as my stats are up and obviously pending evaluation

@ChristinaF if you don’t mind me asking, what major? Also were you placed on the waitlist, then switched, then got off the waitlist?

@jtk9098 : I think that at this point your best move is to wait. Did you check summer session?

@jtk9098 - when my D called, she was told they usually take 60% off the waitlist…so you have a chance!

Thanks everyone, and yes, I did check summer session.

Anyone know when they start taking people off the waitlist? I heard they begin April 1st.

@jtk9098 The problem with answering questions about the wait list is that they’ve only had a wait list one other year out of the last 5…so it’s hard to determine what is “normal”.

I’m not sure it matters which major you are waitlisted for at this point. DUS gets just as full as Smeal because so many students who WANT Smeal have to start in DUS because of the competition getting into Smeal. Some other majors may be less full, but there is no way of really knowing that. Maybe some of the liberal arts majors aren’t as full? But keep in mind, you must be in either DUS or Smeal to take the right sequence of classes and apply to Smeal end of sophomore year.

@hypebeastpsu There must have been other extenuating circumstances for you to get into Smeal with a 3.3 GPA. That is nearly unheard of and won’t be the case for the vast majority of others who try to get into Smeal. Smeal accepted only 11% of it’s applicants last year and there have been many rejections of people with much much higher stats than yours.

Don’t get me wrong - take it and run - but it’s unwise to advise others that they can also get in with those stats - because something either went wrong (mistake made), or there were extenuating circumstances. In general, a 3.3 would usually get you deferred to a commonwealth campus in ANY major or at the very least summer start with DUS. A fall UP (or even summer) admit to Smeal with a 3.3 is extremely unusual.

I applied late February and heard back after 2-3 weeks.
Applied for Chemical Engineering (University Park)
SAT (new) : 800M 610ER
Toefl:101
Taking IB and got predicted all 6s in my HL (math, chem, phy)

i just copy pasted my uk personal statement lmao but i think its quite good (i guess??)

From what i heard, you can just not attend after accepting but its ‘unethical’ since our spot could have been given to someone whos waitlisted

It’s not unethical at all to withdraw your acceptance. They keep your deposit money in exchange, and depending on when you withdraw, they could still give that spot to someone from the waitlist if they wanted to.

It may not be technically be unethical to accept and then withdraw because another acceptance came in, but some people accept at many schools and hold spots in those schools while they decide, and that IS unethical in my opinion. Personally, I don’t think it’s terribly ethical to accept unless you know you are going there. Otherwise you just wait until the deadline for all schools. It does take spots that can be given to other schools. The only exception to it in my mind is if you are waiting on big reach school and you accept somewhere else, then get into the reach school so you withdraw. My son was accepted to 4 schools. Once he chose Penn State, we sent letters to the other 3 admission offices to withdraw his acceptance so that it opened spots for others. They didn’t have to wait until May to determine their yield with him at least.

When do New Student Orientation dates get assigned?

This might be a tad late but d’you guys reckon there’s any reason my application is still “under review” even if I applied within the timeframes to get my decision waaaaay before this? I’m from Out of State.

I think it is somewhat unethical to accept at more than one school; but I think, if you are waitlisted, it is perfectly OK to accept at one school and then withdraw if you get in. How else can you secure a spot in college?

My D is currently on the waitlist for her dream school…PSU…so if anyone knows they aren’t going…:-))

There’s one spot about to be freed a least.

@shadow08 I’d call admissions Monday if you think you should have already heard. Mistakes happen

Am an international student…my Entrance Semester is Summer 2017… Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering(Undergraduate)… When do i expect an admission decision. I applied in March,… I keep checking the portal… So anxious…
:expressionless:

Hey guys,
I just gave my ALEKS math placement test. I scored a 95. Now they are telling me that I have 2 more chances. Is it okay that I only attempt one or I have to give all 3?

Also
How much time does it take for the NSO invitation to arrive after giving the test?

Thanks in advance

@“Sheel Patel” You don’t have to take it again. They allow three times in order to place into the math that one wants, but with a 95 you will already place in Math 140.

I am not sure when the NSO invitations come out but If I remember correctly it was within a couple of weeks after my daughter took her ALEKS a few years ago.

@jlhpsu
Thanks
