I got into UP for mechanical engineering for the fall, but after strong consideration have decided that it was not worth going into around $150,000 in debt when I had essentially a full ride to UMass Lowell’s Honors College for mechanical engineering. Thank you to everyone for all your help!
@nj3edu Good call! NO matter how good the school is, and PSU is a great engineering school - it is never a good idea to go into debt if you have other less expensive options. Congrats and good luck!
@junkpix My son was accepted at NCSU but to exploratory studies - Not ENgineering. They do not guarantee that he will be allowed to get into engineering so Its a no for us. He will go to VA tech. More expensive than state but closer to home than Penn.
If I am in a four person supplemental housing room can I pick my three roommates?
@jackoneill You can request up to 3 roommates in the preference section of eliving. You just have to also make sure that they have requested you. It only works if you’ve requested each other.
I heard that admissions begins taking people off the UP waitlist in early April. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
^^ I want to know about this too. I really need to know if I got in. Btw, is the waitlist ranked?
Regarding the ALEKS math exam, do I have to take MATH 140 if I’m placed into it? I got a 97 on the ALEKS, but I’m a business major and only need to take MATH 110.
^No problem: with an ALEKS 97, you can take ANY class you want - “Math and Money”, “Business Statistics”, “Math for Citizenship”… and you can take Math 110, not 140. in fact, if you’ve taken calculus, look at the international educational systems ’ equivalencies, as you might even get credit for Math 110 through a course taken in high school.
BTW, congratulations, any score 90+ is really good. ![]()

@anshikka the waitlist isn’t ranked! What major did you get waitlisted for? mind posting your stats?
@jtk9098 I applied for computer science at UP and got waitlisted

When would you expect your result if you submitted ur 1st semester senior grades last week?
The waitlist can only move as fast as people decline their offers, but shouldn’t it have significant movement by mid-April just from a logistics common sense perspective? They aren’t expecting you to go significantly past May 1, I would imagine.
did anyone gett off so far?
I just took the Aleks thing, almost forgot about it, got an 82 on it and I’m going into engineering and was wondering if this is a decent score. I figured out half way through the test how to graph specific points which was kind of a bummer because I had to skip a few so probably could have done better for sure, but if anyone can give me some info on this that would be great.
Only need a 76 to place into MATH 140. Anything above that is just icing on the cake.
Ah ok thanks for letting me know @bodangles
Is math 140 basically just first year calculus like similar to calc ab and bc in high school?
@averagewhiteguy MATH 140 = Calc 1 = Calc AB. Pick out your recommended academic plan by major and campus here (http://www.engr.psu.edu/academicplans/) and familiarize yourself with what you’re required to take.
(Not to sound short with you, it’s just important info to know! You’ll need it to schedule at NSO.)
Yeah I took Calc Ab in junior year of high school and am taking BC now, but don’t want to place out of those because I heard its a good idea to take them again freshman year so Math 140 sounds good to me, since I’m doing engineering. Thanks
