PSU (University Park) Class of 2019 Decision Thread

@sunnyjames65‌ I probably should just unplug my computer so that I can’t.

I did post last night about acceptance but wanted to add info as this thread was originally created. Thanks jlhpsu

General Comments: 1st choice fall UP but put summer as alternate knowing SAT’s on lower end. Has gotten acceptances at other schools for fall including PITT so not sure what D will decide. Realize competition tough as many from her school accepted to Branches so she is happy to have been offered summer at least.

Has anyone’s status changed during the day in the last few days? Or has it only been after 5pm?

@girlfromworld1 and @jihpsu - my son’s status was just updated to the “coming days”. He appliied at PSU to Smeal for Finance or Accounting.

I just called to ask if the portal will be updated over the weekend. The admissions counselor told me that the portal is updated each morning, but probably not over the weekend for anyone that doesn’t yet have a decision (my D doesn’t) and that my daughter would probably not hear until next week. UGH!

They said they received 67,000 applications this year. Contrary to what some others have heard here, they told me that decisions are still being made and they are on track to have all applicants notified by next Friday. Apparently my D still doesn’t even have a decision. She assured me that not hearing yet is not a denial. She said that it does not work that way…there is “room”, but that they received more applications than ever this year so they are behind.

Now, some of what she said is in complete contrast to what others have been told. Also, I know that the portal updates in the evening as we have seen that on this board. So if anyone else calls and gets a different answer, please post! I think I may just shut off the computer this weekend. This is really stressing me out. I can’t believe she applied September 2nd and she’s one of the last to be processed. It makes absolutely no sense to me how Penn State does this.

I just called & was told that they only update once a day and that they won’t be updating over the weekend. I don’t think that’s true at all, it seems to me that I’ve seen more status changes happen around 6-6:30 pm than any other time. She also said they will be making decisions up to the 31st, when their own FB page said they’ve all been made.

Back in Oct I called them because my S’s transcripts were held up in the Naviance debacle & they finally found them after 3 weeks. It was still before Nov. 30, but I was concerned that it was later than we wanted, with the rolling admissions. The admissions counselor assured me that they didn’t start looking at any applications before Nov. 30 so he would be right in the mix. Then his friend was offered admission into the Engineering School two weeks later, in mid-Nov.

This is really frustrating.

I know my portal updated in the evening yesterday because I checked at 4pm before work and when I got home at 9pm it had changed…

@pinkmd you probably talked to the same person I spoke with since we called around the same time. I didn’t ask to speak to a counselor but I probably should have. I was told the same thing about everyone applying prior to November 30 receiving the same consideration but that made no sense to me since people started hearing in October. Add into that the fact that some people who applied AFTER priority already have decisions and honestly, I just give up trying to figure it out. I guess it will be what it will be. 7 more days feels like torture though. And if she’s denied after a nearly 5 month wait…oh geez…I don’t even know… I’m trying to be Zen…what will be will be, etc…it’s not working. sorry for the venting folks.

@jlhpsu I figured the same thing, that I probably spoke with the same person. I may call later, we’ll see how I feel, lol.

If I recieved the coming of days status last night around 6 pm, do you think I will hear tonight? Has the trend been one day? Thanks for your help and good luck to those still waiting!!

@htc2032 One thing I’ve learned is there is no “trend” with PSU admissions. Some people hear in a day, others it’s taken a few days. I think it’s likely you will hear tonight as many have been getting notifications only one day later. Also, despite what admissions told me this morning, I’ve seen many updates occur over the weekend with people who already have the coming days status. Good Luck!

This waiting is certainly torture and so many of us are in the same boat that at least for now we can find some kind of comfort or comradery in that. Let’s look at it as life lessons for our aspiring Penn Staters- they have all worked hard and done all they had to do. Now the decision is in the hands of admissions. I’ve been told that waiting builds character (??~!)

I’ll add a little humor to our situation. I saw this on my S’s Twitter the other day. (Excuse the language, he doesn’t know I read it). “Patience is a virtue I don’t have f-ing time for”

if you search twitter for “waiting Penn State” there are a few really funny tweets from kids who are in the same boat. I know that what will be will be and no amount of worrying will change that. And whatever happens it’s for the best…and every other platitude out there. But…

@pinkmd‌ @jlhpsu‌ I got the same person, I think. I called in the morning several days ago, and she told me that the portal is updated each morning by 8am (and then everyone’s posting their evening updates!). When my son called last week he was told that they were “finishing up” all decisions and notifications were going to start going out. But, one other thing–my son’s buddy has not heard back yet, either, and he has a much higher GPA but slightly lower ACTs than my son’s SATs, same number of APs/HNs (11+). A couple of others who have not heard back do not have the rigorous classes at all, but guessing their GPAs are good. If decisions have not been made for us, then do you think they are evaluating us against the new crop of post-Nov 30 applicants?

I would assume yes, unfortunately.

@pinkmd That’s great!

I choose to believe that there are still spots available, even for those who haven’t gotten decisions yet. I’m not sure why the person who posted on FB said decisions have all been made and the admissions staff is saying differently, but who knows? Too many kids from our school haven’t heard for me to believe that there is no more room and that many of them won’t still be accepted. Amazing that there has been such a rise in applications. I do wonder if applications had been down since the scandal and are going back to pre-scandal numbers since things have calmed down or if these are unusually high numbers. We had 57 apply from our high school–last year it was 37 and historically the highest it’s been is 46, I think.

@Leyland‌ @pinkmd‌ I don’t think so. Unless they completely lie about what Priority means and I don’t think they are. I think that we are being reviewed under more favorable criteria. The way I understood it is that there is admission criteria for priority applicants, and then that criteria is raised for post priority applicants. So, if the entrance requirement is a 3.5 for priority, it may be a 3.7 for non priority. I’m completely making up numbers by the way.

The people who answer the phone are admissions assistants, but not the ones with their hands on the applications. I have seen us all get different answers based on who answers the phone. Some are more helpful than others. I’m wondering if we need to speak to an actual counselor to get real answers. It would eliminate so much stress if they were less mysterious about it all!

I am sorry to hear about your D’s status. I hope the re-evaluation/appeals works…I too have a D at PSU and twins awaiting to hear about their acceptance. Both applied in Nov., status has not changed. Can you share your D’s stats? I’m wondering what the “denied” range of stats are…take care

I was told to call back b/n 1-5 - that is when a “counselor” can speak to me in more depth???
