My son, (who is a junior now) did the summer session and it was the best thing he ever did! He met a great group of life-long friends who he now lives with in a house downtown. He took two gen ed classes and a business class. The great thing about the summer session is that you get to experience the campus and learn to get around before the 40,000 students arrive in the fall. He now has a lighter load and was able to take classes geared toward his major. Best decision he ever made!
I have one son already at PSU University Park and one NOT patiently waiting for a reply…status changed to “coming days” yesterday at about 6pm…He applied in October to DUS and checked off the summer session option…so we wait a little longer…arrggghhhh
My twins had change of status yesterday…coming days…at 11 AM, and we have not heard a decision as of 10:30 AM today. Thinking the worst, but hoping for the best! Stay busy and try not to torture your minds - easier said than done!
The summer session might be expensive, but it’s not “in addition to” what you already need for your major and to graduate. The classes you are taking count towards graduation so the money is money you would spend anyway on the degree.
I don’t think of summer as a denial either. If my D gets summer, she will be THRILLED. I love that Penn State gives that extra opportunity to kids who’s stats are in the bottom of the middle 50%. I also don’t understand people who select summer as an option who have no intention on doing summer. It’s one thing if situations change after applying, but I’ve seen a few who have no intention on doing summer. I’d rather see those spots not taken from the get go. Only appy for what you are willing to do.
My D has a GPA at the bottom of the 50% but an ACT at the top of the 50%. So…who knows. She got the coming days yesterday and I’ve been forbidden from checking her account from here on out. She doesn’t really know much about my CC alter ego so she has no idea how stressed I’ve been about it. I didn’t want to stress her out!
Applied DUS with Summer term as first option. Status changed last night to “We are in the final stages of review. A decision will be posted within 2 weeks.” My application was sent September 28th and was all complete by second week of October. Will I still find out before January 31st?
Are you an alum too? This is crazy that I keep watching these threads, and my kids are out skiing etc. I do know they are worried like crazy too, but not as obsessed as Mom!
Got the coming days status
I received the “coming days” status yesterday around 7 PM. What are the chances I get my admissions decision today?
I know this is a given, but please post if you or your student receives their decision this weekend, after getting their “coming days” status yesterday - good or bad…thanks
My son has been cool as a cucumber through all of this, but last night kinda broke him. He still has “reviewing credentials” as of this minute, and so he knows he is going to be the last to hear. He has some excellent offers already, but that isn’t enough of a consolation. When I am logical about this, I think that if they wanted to deny us for UP, they would have done it a long time ago. I think they are finding any way at all to accept our kids.
FYI, @defndr11 See what jlhpsu has written. The summer courses count towards graduation requirements, so either do it sooner or later; either way, you pay. Since you are on a pre-med track, and your post-secondary school studies will likely make up more than 10% of your entire life, wouldn’t you want to get a head start?
@Leyland I love your thought…they are trying to find any way at all to accept our kids…this is probably true, need to stay positive!
@mick80 both my husband and I are alumni. @Leyland i agree…I am hoping that everyone waiting didn’t wait this long to be denied. I think that maybe we needed extra review? I guess time will tell. My D said today, “I just have to KNOW already, whatever it is” and I think that’s where a lot of kids are. Hoping and hoping for good news, but whatever the news, lets just be done with it already so we can plan our lives!
My D is applying to College of Engineering and still has “credentials” status. We have seen other COE acceptances with lower GPA and ACT scores - sigh - could it be because we are out of state? She has 6 AP science classes, AP Calc, Honors, etc…
Same with my D….engineering, OOS still says “credential” status. Very frustrating…however good to hear we are not alone
@Leyland Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I believe there are still spaces left. They accept people after priority, so there must still be room. I think they evaluate each kid on his/her merits and decide. I’m frustrated for my son that it’s taking so long, but do believe it’s not all denials from here.
Don’t be discouraged I know it seems like so many people have been accepted but you have to remember they accept over 8,000!
I agree with all the summer posts-It’s just heartbreaking to see her so upset and she won’t listen to the voice of reason :(( Thank you all for the info and lots of luck to you all.
After checking my son’s status this morning around 8 am (with no change) and vowing I would not check again this weekend - I could not help myself and checked . Finally - coming days status update sometime this morning. Ugh! ThanKfully this is almost over!!
Some of my son’s friends that did the summer session with him did it because they were planning on double majoring etc. they were happy to do it and get some gen eds out of the way…they were by no means “not smart” enough to ge t in for the fall session…they chose to go to summer session!
^^I know several who were admitted for fall but chose to start in the summer, son included.
And with the credits he got for his AP, dual enrollemnt classes and summer, he will complete his double major one semester early. Summer cost $7k, but cutting out a semester saves about $16K. If he was not going for a double major he would be finished two semester early. So if you have some credits from HS classes, summer could save you in the end.
