Sorry half the message didn’t send. Should we call again. We were told no prior to
Going crazy. Message still says “two weeks”. My other D was accepted to UP four years ago on 1/28 – hoping that date brings good luck!
@mlkcccslp if you were already told no, then it’s a no unfortunately. They weren’t making decisions on re-evaluations until after priority applicants, but I believe that if it was an option they would tell you that they would re-evaluate. If they said they wouldn’t then they must not think your D qualifies for reconsideration for some reason.
I’ve seen some kids told no right on the phone and others who had high stats told that there is no room in the major or campus they want to be reconsidered for.
You can always call again just to make sure you’ve done 110% of what you can do, but if they’ve already denied a reconsideration then I think that’s usually final. I’m so sorry…I know it’s so hard…
Accepted! School of Health & Human Development for the summer session

@cedort yay congrats that’s awesome!!! By any chance do you know around when you received the decision?
@cedort on your portal page on the right you will see a bunch of publications that you can read to help you figure out summer session. Then one on LEAP summer program was especially helpful to Us. Congrats!
As an FYI-It looks as though the summer session ends Aug 15 and freshman arrive on Aug 22.

General Comments: Accepted DUS Summer 2015.
I have been lurking on this board for months but would like to thank all of you (especially @jlhpsu) for keeping me sane! It’s been a long ride and I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear of all the acceptances and how my heart hurt for those that were not. The system is not always fair, that’s for sure! Everyone will wind up where they are intended to be, but it is SO hard to recognize that…rejection stings.
I wanted to post my daughters stats and subsequent decision to help those that will be frantically searching this thread next year for the class of 2020…maybe it will provide some help…especially for legacies. I was following jlhpsu closely because our daughters’ stats were so similar.
ACCEPTED!!! DUS FALL 2015 ( I called to change it from Smeal to DUS a few months ago…if I hadn’t been on this board I would have never known that I could even do that and she would not have been accepted.)
OOS-NC- Large Catholic school almost 400 in grade
GPA-3.7W (that is the only GPA the students’ receive so not sure UW.)
Only took 5 Honors courses (no AP’s), but a lot of Advanced courses. (4.0 only though)
SAT-610M, 500R, 460W
ACT-23
Hook-both parents PSU alums
Many many EC’s including being a ballerina for many years -probably 15-20 hours/wk in studio, part-time hostess at a local restaurant, 4 weeks away last summer as camp counselor, varsity sport-4years, leadership team, etc…
We found out last night (1-27-15) and we were all ecstatic!
I thought the only way she had a chance was summer admission so we were very surprised she got fall. I actually did summer start all those years ago and made some great friends that I had throughout school and beyond. Now with LEAP it’s even better. Great opportunity, IMO.
Thank you again for starting this jlhpsu and maybe our daughters will connect at some point. The $$ may hold us back, still waiting on in-state deferrals, VTech and Clemson.
Best of luck to you all! Go PENN STATE!
@kmcpsu Congratulations! That’s awesome. And I think it makes perfect sense that she got fall rather than summer. My daughter’s GPA was lower than your daughters (3.4) but her ACT was higher (28). Given that they count GPA as 2/3 of the decision, it makes sense that your D got fall and mine got summer. I don’t care either way, just glad they both got in!
She’s now deep into the roommate searches on facebook and ■■■■■■■■.com which is intimidating to me. I guess it’s better than the random roommate, but still…I’ts like a dating service for roommates, lol! I’m too old and have been married too long to have experience with internet dating but I have friends who’ve done it and the matches aren’t always perfect, lol. Oh well…it’s a learning experience. I’m trying really hard to stay out of the roommate search unless she asks me. She will have to live with them, so whatever she thinks is fine with me.
@ kmcpsu. Congrats! Like you, I’ve been “lurking” - because for some reason I tried numerous times to register and I never received the email to click on link. Finally yesterday was able. I felt I could have offered much support based on my previous D acceptance a few years ago. My youngest D stats for 2019 are quite similar to your D stats; although her GPA is a bit higher. Her’s is 4 w. My concern has been her SATs, so to increase her chances we requested summer and she is DUS. My question…did your D put summer on the application? From the the archives, it looks as though summer applicants are first looked at for Fall, and then if do not quality - they look to see if qualify for summer. Just wondering if that is true.
@gildak You have to put summer as an option or they won’t consider you for it. They will first consider you for fall, then summer. But if you don’t put summer, they don’t automatically consider you for it.
Okay, great. When we put summer, we thought that was her only option. It’s nice to know she has the possibility of Fall. If we knew that we probably would have done that with my other daughter 4 years ago, but she was adament she did not want summer. But thankfully she was accepted to the Fall but she had a higher SATs than my youngest daughter. It’s been a long 3 months!!!
Just one more question jihpsu…there wasn’t an option on the application to say first choice fall and second choice summer is there? Someone referred to that along the way. She simply requested summer.
Just thought I would add my daughter’s info for future reference for folks. I did not realize how lucky she was, applying in early November and being accepted on 12/6–did not ever check portal, as was not expecting a decision that quickly. Congrats to everyone who has recently found out–what a long, drawn out haul for you all! Crazy!
Anyway, my daughter is super interested in attending, but the OOS price tag may be a little high for us–still waiting on acceptances and scholarship/financial aid info on all schools to make the best decision for her and for the family. Her older sister attends UCONN and that costs us about 24K or so. Really want a different experience for her though, as obviosuly eveyone and their brother attends UCONN from around here, it seems (great school though!). Good luck to those still waiting!!
Stats:
SAT: 2120 (720M, 720 CR, 680W)
SAT IIs: N/A
GPA: 4.28 W / 4.62 UW

Other stats: 8 APs (AP Scholar award), all other classes honors, NHS, student government all 4 years, many other clubs, lots of volunteer work, 3 varsity sports, captain of all 3 senior year, tons of scholar/athlete awards, works PT as gymnastics teacher, etc. This kid is never home! I worry about all the free time she will have on her hands next year!

General Comments: Applied and accepted to Smeal for fall, did not check off summer as an option. Did not apply to honors, as she did not want to write another essay (!!!)
@gildak If she only put summer, then that’s all she would be considered for. The application asks for preferred starting semester. If you select fall, then it asks you if you want to be considered for summer if they are unable to offer admission for fall. You must select “yes” to that to be able to be considered for summer if fall was not available to you.
In your case, since your D didn’t select fall, she would only be evaluated for summer.
It’s confusing, I know. I’ve seen others get caught up in the same thing.
Darn! We messed up then on the application then.
gildak, there is a way to choose summer as a second option, but it is not intuitive on the application. When it asks for starting semester preference, you are given the options of spring, fall or summer. My son initially chose summer rather than fall because we thought it was one or the other, and we knew summer was easier to get into, and my son would rather summer than get denied. We had no idea that if you choose fall, it will then give you the summer option as a second choice. I only found out about that option second-hand (probably through this site.) So after we found out, my son sent an email and they easily made the change to fall as a first choice, with summer as the second choice. Definitely a design error on the app that should be fixed to make it more clear (the admissions counselor I spoke to on the phone indicated that there was tons of confusion about this.)
greatwhiteway - thank you for additional info. Has your son heard back? I’m tempted to have my D call/send email - but at this point I’m not sure if it would hurt chances more at this point? When did you send email? Of course, she may be getting evaluated today so may be too late.
Yes he heard back. If you want fall as your first option, I would call and see if there’s still time to switch. They assured me multiple times that putting fall first in no way jeopardizes your chances for summer if you are qualified for it. On the other hand, if you put summer first, they won’t even consider you for fall.
