@Nikki1079. I would call to check. My D received the “two week” status on Monday - which I felt was extremely late, and then today received the coming days. Since all decisions should be made by Friday I would call just confirm all is okay with your application.
@gildak I am stressing out a lot now. I wonder if they forgot me or if this means they are avoiding me or secretly denying me or what. I’ve been having a lot of problems with admissions and now I’m just genuinely upset.
@Nikki1079 Oh, no, no no…don’t stress out! That was not my intent. I was just saying it’s better to play it safe and check out that all is okay. If there is a problem, at least there is still time for them to correct and get a decision before the next batch. I don’t think there is any hidden message behind it. Call - you’ll feel better.
Question: If a student is accepted into a school, i.e. Communications, are they able to change their major to a different school or go undecided?
@Nikki1079 I’d call tomorrow. You applied prior to Nov 30th and had one set of SAT’s there before then. Even if they didn’t use your December scores they should have used your first scores. So you’d still be priority. Hopefully they used your updated scores. You’ve been waiting a long time! I’d call first thing (I think 8am) and fund out why you haven’t gotten the coming days status yet. Hang in there!
Thank you for your response. She applied DUS and for the Summer 2015. Her alternative campus, if not accepted to UP, was Altoona. I feel horrible. All of her friends with similar GPA’s and test scores got accepted. We’re PA residents and I currently attend PSU! Do you think it would make a difference if I myself went to the Admissions office?
@nPSUk21 ugh…that’s rough. I don’t think it will help though. I think it was just a super competitive year. When did she apply?
I think it’s so hard to compare kids stats, as I’ve said before. Every school scores and weights differently…so we don’t really know how it all shakes out in the admissions office. My D had a 3.4. I have a good friend who’s son goes to a neighboring district…she told me her son has a 4.1. But when we started looking at grading scales, my daughters school was much harder. Had she gone to the other school she’d have been well above a 4.0. Penn State takes all of this into consideration…my point being, strict comparison of grades doesn’t work so well…
@gildak no I promise youre not the one stressing me out! It’s a long story but admissions has been very disorganized with me and I wouldn’t be surprised of anything with them anymore haha. Thank you so much for helping. I’m getting my dad to call first thing in the morning
@jlhpsu yes My dad will be calling at 8am. I have noticed they do tend to handle parents better than if a student (ex. Myself) calls. This has been a very stressful process and I really hope the answer is worth it.
Thank you both
I really appreciate it.
@gildak also admissions counselors all tend to say different things. The man may say your child’s best bet is a branch campus while if you call again tomorrow another counselor may say your child’s stats are perfect for summer. It is all very confusing and Disorganized since each say different things.
@jlhpsu I joined the Facebook page for Penn State Parents. Are there any other groups that are worth while joining? We are OOS and do not know much about PSU. Your help has been great !
@jlhpsu If I were to call admissions tomorrow would I be able to ask for DUS Fall?
I was accepted Summer in Eberly with a 26 ACT (28 in Math) and a 3.91 GPA (My school grades the exact same way as your D’s does, 95=A)
Thank you!
@Tessie22 That’s all I have done. They seem to be a very active informative group so I’m sure there is plenty to learn over there. They’ve already answered my questions! Also, I’m an alumni and we go to PSU all of the time. If you have any specific questions feel free to message me.
@SoccerDude0305 you could try, but they seem super competitive this year specifically. If you can’t switch, I’d take summer admission and run with it! So many with high stats have been denied altogether…anyone with an offer has earned it and is very lucky. Because I’ve seen several kids who also earned it, but somehow weren’t lucky and they were denied. A call certainly can’t hurt…all they can say is no…but make sure if you are reconsidered and they decline you, that you haven’t given up your summer spot!
Good luck!
I don’t think this year is specifically competitive as much as PSU is back on the steep upward trend they were on before the hiccup they experienced. The number of applications and the admission statistics of those matriculating have increased steadily. Competitiveness is increased a bit more as PSU-UP has reach its capacity. State budget cuts, tuition increases that don’t match cost increases (mostly driven by health care and insurance) had the university cutting items. We are reaching the point where instructor/professor hiring has slowed. Combined with initiatives to improve undergraduate education that, among other things, stress learning initiatives that are only possible with smaller class sizes and more student faculty interactions, they just can’t “squeeze” anymore in to meet the demand at UP.
This trend will continue.
Called and they were very nice and handled things well today. I was happy. They said another couple weeks though! Oh well, I’ll accept a longer wait as no news is good news.
@Nikki1079 I’m glad to hear and hopefully some stress has been relieved. So did you call or did you have your dad call? If they are saying another couple of weeks, did they not record all your documents as received prior to 11/30?
My application status still reads:
“Your application is complete and we are reviewing your credentials. You should expect an admission decision in four to six weeks. Check back here for updates.”
Should I call?
I did file by the priority deadline. I’m a US citizen with international credentials as i did my high schooling
in India. Is that possible why my status still hasn’t changed ?
@geek97 yes, probably…because the international deadline is February 1st. So they probably consider you an international student because your credentials are international. You can always call and double check.
@gildak I have no clue what they’re considering me as honestly. Just hoping for good news. I am assuming a couple weeks means two weeks so hopefully I will have answer by then. My dad called but I heard on speaker.
Ok. Here it is. DD changed major to DUS by email on Mon. I emailed the gentleman again today and she is now in in the fall /DUS!!! I think this is much better for her as she is really not premed material. Good luck to all waiting! WE R!!!
Congrats @defndr11!!
