Psychology Paper: Oedipus Rex, Pedophilia, Sex/Aggression

For a paper, my teacher requires us to choose from the list of topics below. Notice that they’re very awkward and therefore commonly avoided topics, and that’s why we have to do them. Furthermore, we have to focus our paper on a case study, which means we have to find a person who has any of the following mindsets and who can support my main argument. Any ideas on how to get people to admit that they have the Oedipus Rex Complex or are pedophiles? I’m not having any luck so far. In the end, I think I’ll choose my topic based on the first case study I can find that deals with any of these issues.

-Why and how do people develop the Oedipus Rex Complex?
-What is the psychology behind pedophilia?
-Are men naturally attracted to younger women, and women to older men?
-Are sex and aggression the two main driving forces of the unconscious mind?
-Is homosexuality/transsexuality a choice?
-True or False: Fathers tend to be more protective of daughters than sons, and mothers of sons than daughters? Explain.

You can’t make someone admit to being a pedophile unless they are caught. People normally wouldn’t admit to that kind of stuff.

I think men are by societal standards attracted to younger women. It’s just been the norm for a long time for an older man to marry a younger woman (back in the late 1800’s and before that especially). And it tends to be that the way you were raised and the influences around you will affect how you act and see the world. Like when you are young and young girls are given dolls and boys are given toy trucks. I can barely think that it is completely 100% natural, as it is more of something that has just been convention and is grown into how things are done.

And I think fathers are more protective of daughters. I know from experience of how I was always soo limited in my ability to do things. I would always say how it wasn’t fair because my older brother got to do the same thing at the same age as me or younger. But they would always just say that it’s because he is a boy. My mom does the same thing…not just my dad. But I can’t blame them, look on the news and see who gets kidnapped and raped and murdered most of the time. Like 85% of the time it’s a girl (please don’t quote me on that…it’s just a guess). Yeah, it sucks…but it’s life. And you deal with it and get over it, and try to change things.

-Is homosexuality/transsexuality a choice?

I think that would be the easiest to do. Along with the Father/daughter, Mother/son one. Like, for the homosexuality one, you can already get heaps of information from this thread on homosexuality on cc cafe (or highschool?). That thread has like heaps and heaps of pages with people’s opinions (although I think it got a bit aggresive at the end…?). Maybe you can interview someone you know who’s gay or lesbian… (if they are willing to come foward)

With the father/daughter thing, my dad has always been protective of me when I was like 13, 14. When I’d go to the movies, he’d always be like, any guys going with you? what time are you coming back? how long is the movie? etc… He didn’t say it angrily… more like protectively. He always asked where I was going, waht time i’d get back. My mum asked nothing of sort… she just gave me rides back and forth (she did ask what time she was to pick me up).

And i’m not sure about the son/mother thing but guys used to get really offended when people joked about their mom’s. like, guy1 : “your mom’s fat” - guy2 :“oooo thats it, you’re gonna get it” lol But i think mothers are loving in all ways. Like, if my mum had a son, I think she’d treat me the same as now. Dads are more protective of their daughters and expect sons to be all rough and guyish and manly.

I suppose if you’re bent on doing the pedophilia topic, you could perhaps venture to a jail and ask for an interview with an inmate? I’m not sure if this would be possible, but it’s an idea.

The last one is true because fathers know how they used to act bin High School, and don’t appove of their daughters being victims of those same actions. Its a double standard, but a common one.

the last one is easiest I think. Personally I think this is true. My father has three daugters and one son, and I have pretty good support for the fact he’s more protective of us 3 than of my brother.

About the the older men/younger women idea… I’ve always thought that this was an instinctual aspect of humans resulting from evolution. When it comes to animals in the wild, females seek strong males who will provide for them and take care of their children. Additionally, males seek out healthy, youthful females who will provide them with strong offspring. I think this translates to humans quite easily. Older men tend to have more money than younger men and are therefore better equipped to provide for a family. Furthermore, younger women tend to be more attractive than older women (huge generalization), and in our minds, we equate beauty with health.

I’ve always thought this was a very interesting idea…
