Public high school no online options yet

Hi. I live in Massachusetts and at at the moment our large public district is not offering online learning. There are concerns about equity. Seems apparent to me the kids won’t go back this year. I will be watching our school committee meet on Monday online and wanted to have a sense of what other school districts are doing. Is your district online? Are teachers grading? My daughter is a Junior taking the most rigorous classes available and starting to look like her year is over. I know this is all unprecedented but trying to figure out next steps for her. She is done with the ACT and is signed up for SAT subject tests in June if those run.

I saw the quote from your commissioner on education that no remote learning would happen due to the possibility of inequity. (not all kids have computer access)

You need to push your school board and your administrators. I am in a different state and students are receiving their education online. It is evolving and a learn as they go process for everyone but it is working.

It hasn’t been announced yet but I’m 99% sure schools will not be reopening this year. Kids must have an education. This is going to take phone calls and demands by the MA parents. Good luck.

This is a difficult situation with school district taking vastly different approaches to online learning. My D21’s school is on spring break and has not yet communicated plans for the rest of the semester. If her district opts not to offer online classes we are either going to have her take the classes she can on Khan Academy (working with school to take them as credit) or ask another local district if she can open enroll for the semester and take their online classes. Neither is ideal, but she cannot just sit around doing nothing.

Our district in IL was also worried about equity so they signed out all the school’s laptops and computers to any student that didn’t have access at home, and one of the local providers is giving free WiFi for low income families.
