Public (High) schools woo foreign students to boost ranks

This is a story about high schools recruiting for foreign full pay students, who believe that this could be a stepping stone to ivy leagues. It stands to reason that these students will be full pay even for college and hence attractive to top colleges.

Most of these students can only stay in the US one year, so they’re much like traditional exchange students. The big difference is that they’re being recruited to keep some struggling public schools alive. It remains to be seen how many of them actually do get into top schools - and whether they will get enough FA to attend. This could prove a short-lived trend if enough of them don’t end up at the top schools they’re seeking. Because
as we all know, it’s not that easy to get into those top schools.

After the quote about “they don’t know where Maine is, but they know where Harvard is.” comes the reason why they will probably never get into Harvard…

Their parents may think getting mostly A’s at an American high school will help their kid get into HYPSM. I feel really sorry for these parents. Huge expenditure hoping for Ivy league. Could save the money, send the kid to a good state school in the US as an international student for undergrad, and if the kid is all that bright, he or she might qualify for a paid PhD program from a highly selective grad school.
