Hi everyone. I am a soon to be senior currently trying to expand my college list to include more research universities where I could have a chance at full merit aid, as I do not qualify for need based. Up until now, my list has consisted of mostly private universities. Recently, I toured my state’s public university and am definitely considering all the great things a public research university atmosphere could add to my college experience. Since I am in love with east coast culture and vibe, I’m looking specifically for schools in the northeast. So I guess my question: what are some good public research universities in the northeast where I could be considered competitive for full scholarships? (I have a 3.9 GPA, 34 ACT, pretty interesting, dedicated ECs with leadership, and will try my best to write creative and engaging essays!).
Currently considering University of Vermont, University of Connecticut, and UMass Amherst. Any others? Thanks

You have great stats there are many private schools where the merit is better, and excellent need-based aid is available.

@BatesParent2019 Thanks for the response! So do public colleges favor in state students when it comes to merit aid? As far as private schools on the east coast, I know the Ivies are excellent for need based but don’t give merit. So far Boston U is the only northern private school which gives merit aid on my list. The other private colleges which give merit aid that I’m seriously looking at are Emory & WUSTL. Though they aren’t in the northeast, I still really love their atmospheres.
Down south they are offering great merit money to lure students down. Alabama, Clemson, South Carolina, etc. The campuses are much better down south for the publics than up north.
Up north, merit aid is slim.
If you want a free ride on merit, you will have to apply to schools well below your level.
Why don’t you run the financial aid calculators at a few highly selective private schools in the north and see what the number is. Try Tufts, Boston College, Northeastern and Boston U.
You have great stats, look for need-based aid at the top schools before you look for merit aid.
