Public Safety v Campus Police

It seems different schools have decidely different views on the role of security on campus. Some schools view security as keeping the students safe - providing rides for partygoers, notifying students when there will be fire checks and will be entering a dorm room, recovery support groups, and RAs that take on the role of mentors and sage advisors. Some schools even have events where drug use is part of the activity - like Zonker Harris day or high noons.
While other schools have zero tolerance and will conduct searches of locked dorm rooms, don’t allow posters promoting drug use (think Bob Marley here) have RAs that report drunken students, will question a student who is walking home and generally are looking to crack down on drinking or recreational drug use.
I am most struck by the range of tolerance and acceptability among colleges. And there really doesn’t seem to be any correlation between geography or school ranking.
It certainly effects the vibe and should be considered - either pro or con.
