Public School Scholarships

What large, big-time sports and party schools will most likely offer me a scholarship.

GPA: 3.5UW – 3.7W (I took the hardest courseload at my school. 18 semesters of ap/honors in 11th and 12th grade)

SAT (M+CR): 1270 (I got a lower score on my first SAT, but I’m retaking and this is what I’m getting on practice tests)

And I’m in the top 10% of my graduating class

I know I’ll get one at Washington State, but what about other Big 10 and Pac 10 schools like ASU and Indiana???

Thanks…

Most of the schools will post their requirements for each scholarship on their website, or you can call them. ASU gave me the info by phone. MSU had it on their website. Just some examples.

What I consider to be a “Big Sports School” is a school that is in a BCS conference (Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 12, Pac 10). With your scores, there are little schools that will give you significant money (i.e. $10,000+), however there are some that will give you small amounts.

I think that you’re a bit out of range with your grades and test scores to challenge at the most difficult publics to gain admission to (Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, Virginia, UNC), so those aren’t included on this list. Also, I went by US News peer assessment, and since you’ve found an affordable safety school in SDSU, which has a peer assessment of 2.8, I figured you only wanted schools that ranked higher. Many schools are missing, but that’s the reason.

There are 39 schools listed here who fit the criteria (competitive for admission, public school, sports school). Now, 7 of the schools don’t list their aid, meaning they are hiding it. I know Wisconsin is awful with merit aid, they are one of the schools who decided not to list theirs. Your list is down to 32. Some of these schools you don’t fare well in gaining aid. Take Auburn for example. You will get in, as they accept many of their applicants and you are above their 25% range, however they give merit aid to 5% of their applicants. I highlighted 16 schools where you have a good chance of getting merit aid with your current scores. You could then eliminate some based on preference.

Go to each college’s website, they will likely have the exact scholarship you qualify for on their website. Some even have bonus features. For example, you are aware of Washington State’s WUE agreement with California. You get the WUE tuition, in addition to potentially the $9127 average scholarship that you are in range for. Some states will give you in-state tuition if you qualify for a scholarship. South Carolina and Texas A&M do so I know for sure.

Thanks for all of the information.

The schools I would be interested in are Indiana, CU-Boulder, and WSU, so I’m glad they are listed. However, I would attend SDSU over WSU…and even with CU’s avg. scholarship it isn’t worth the extra money over SDSU. So with that information, I’m pretty sure I want Indiana to be one of my options.

Thanks again…

SoCal,

I listed the OOS tuition minus the potential scholarship for all the highlighted schools. Here’s the tuition amounts for the 16 schools you are likely to receive a scholarship for:

Take advantage of opportunities when they are presented. The top 5 schools all have a special tuition program. TAMU, Clemson, and SC all give you in-state tuition. WSU and Arizona give you 150% in-state tuition. This is all in addition to the scholarships you will receive. I should note that these schools might have incorrect numbers as they may have included the tuition reduction in their scholarship numbers.

There is a HUGE financial difference between Indiana and Arizona, and there may not be that noticeable of a difference in a degree. You’ll spend $50,000 more at Indiana over 4 years than at a school like Arizona, when the education is the same, the type of school is the same, and the environment is the same.

Also, there are schools like Oregon where you will not get a scholarship, but it will still end up being cheaper than schools you get a scholarship for. Oregon you have the WUE program for, meaning tuition is only 8955 for you. That’s cheaper than the majority of the schools on your list.

Well I don’t plan on going to school in places like South Carolina or Texas so those aren’t options for me.

However, I still like UofA, ASU, and Indiana. I’ll probably pick one of the Arizona schools to apply to, and apply to Indiana and decide from there.

US News is flawed…the numbers for SDSU are from like 4 years ago.
