Public to Private - Can I take all the time I need?

This may seem like an obvious question, but I’m confused.

I am transferring from a large public state school to a small liberal arts college (Barnard) and really want to spend three years there. (Financial aid is not an issue.) I am thinking of declaring another major, and I really want to study abroad.

The problem is, I’m a sophomore now, and if they give me junior standing…am I expected to get in and get out? Here at CU, people take all the time they need to graduate - take semesters off, do six years if necessary, etc. Is that highly abnormal for liberal arts colleges? I really, really want three years (despite the supposed disadvantage during employment/grad school applications). I know I can just talk to my advisor there about it, but I really would like imput now…maybe I can plan a campaign.

(Barnard is still working on my transcript assessments; that’s why I don’t know.)

Anybody have anything?
