Public universities with private-sounding names

University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) sounds like a public university, and it is. There are some schools whose shortened names may not sound like public universities but are. For example, Rutgers does not sound like a public school, but it is, as its full name “Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey” indicates. College of William & Mary also sounds private but is public. What are some other examples?

Auburn, Purdue, Cornell (oh wait, they’re only part public…)

Fort Lewis College (CO)
Snow College (UT )
Great Basin College (NV)
Sierra College (CA)

Miami University is a state school in Ohio.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland is a public LAC.

@carlsen I actually think that is the other way around. University of Miami is a private that sounds like a public.

Stephen F. Austin in Texas. My nephew is a freshman there. Their mascot is the lumberjack. I told him if he comes up to Maine, we’ll get a photo of him in a red flannel shirt, cutting down a big tree.

Cue the “Miami was a university in Ohio before Miami Florida was part of the US” bumper sticker

Miami OH was up and running as a university when what is now the state of Florida still belonged to Spain. The two universities were founded more than 100 years apart.

And yeah, public private Ohio Florida - it’s all confusing.

Or sounds like it is Catholic, since many “University of [city name]” schools are Catholic.

But then there is Miami University in Ohio that is a public school.

@ProfessorPlum168 : It doesn’t count when you are leaving “State University” out of the name (as in “State University of New York at Binghamton” or “Bowling Green State University”). Also, in what universe does “Virginia Commonwealth University” not sound like a public institution? (Not to mention “Virginia Military Institute” or “The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina”.)

Rutgers was a private liberal arts college for most of its existence. It became the state university of NJ after WWII.
