Public works employees killing time

At least once a month, a few DPW trucks and their personnel park in my out of the way cul-de-sac for at least an hour…they get out of their vehicles smoke and talk…As a tax payer, it bugs the heck, out of me…Thought about approcahng them, but think that may not be smart…What would you do? Call the town, write a letter to town council?

It should be noted that i think they do this elsewhere also, as the 1 st vehicle is the street sweeper, which comes only twice a month on my street

Sure…do whatever makes you happy…

Are these garbage trucks?

Ok…you added to your post…

How do you know it’s not their lunch break or something?

Lol,lunch break…it is NOT lunch,trust me…

Not garbage trucks, we must have the largest DPW staff for a municipality…road crew and street sweepers are the norm for a 1+ hour break

It might be their lunch break if they start work early.

Well…what time do they start work?

My lunch isn’t at 12. I am usually done for the day around 1:30. ;)

My husband is a garbage man. On the one hand, the abuse is staggering. On the other hand their work starts at 5:45 am, so lunch is usually at 9:30. They are required to meet the supervisor at a designated time at a designated spot (it isn’t fuel efficient for them to drive back to the garage and then back out to the route – which can be half an hour away from the garage – to have the meeting). Purpose of the meeting is to determine which trucks will finish routes and which won’t, necessitating sending other trucks to those locations. The designated spot is usually a side street, out of the way of traffic, usually involves conversation, and is required by the city.

I wouldn’t report it if I were you, but I live in NYC and the retaliation may be more extreme than in your area.

Sounds like lunch break.

Btw, have you tried doing their job for a day? If not, are you really sure you understand what it entails? Do you appreciate what it takes?

And btw, have you tended your own garden today?

Unless their loitering was bothering me, I probably would leave it alone. But, if it were me, the loitering probably would be bothering me. I try not to make it my business how other people are doing their jobs… I suspect their employers can tell if the cars ran for an hour + less than they should have been.

The man that drives the street sweeper through my parents neighborhood used to pull up into the lady across the streets driveway every day at 9am to visit. That was his break since he started work at like 5am. We all got a kick out of hearing the BEEP BEEP BEEP when the street sweeper backed back out again afterward, announcing his presence to the whole neighborhood… They’re together now and it makes for quite the entertaining story.

I love the defending of this, lol…there are several threads on executives and other white collar employees stealing,et al…but i must have touched the third rail. ;). These guys take their lunch at the same place i do at NOON…they killed the last 90 minutes in a secluded cul de sac , which is also the last street in town…Our DPW does not collect garbage…sheez, whack the white collar guy and protect the blue collar union guy…And lets not forget it is tax dollars paying for them to sit and smoke…

Debbie, you have no idea what you are talking about, lol

How you addressed me says everything anyone needs to know.

I think it has more to do with defending someone who does a hard, thankless job for not a lot of money.

Um… very few people have “defended” this. They’re asking questions mostly. If that’s “defending” then so be it. zoose offered a reasonable explanation… that’s about the only thing I can see that’s “defending” this.

Then go for it qdogpa…like I said…

Go report them…

Hard job, yes. The “not a lot of money” part, no. They earn a good salary, especially for an unskilled job.

And come back and let us know how it works out for you. Particularly if there is a legitimate reason of which you are not presently aware.

If it was a one time thing,i would not give a rats a$$ about it, but it is way too often, and to see 5 guys sitting on the curb for 1 1/2 hours is annoying for a taxpayer…hard and thankless job? Our municipal workers have received an increase EVERY year for as long as i lived here, with NOT one layoff…Not sure how many other professions can say the same…what happened to work ethic?

Why don’t you ask public works and find out what is going on?

Do you need help with the phone number? ;)

Now it’s an hour and a half?

My husband’s meetings are in the same locations each day of the week, depending on which area is having garbage pick-up that day. It probably annoys the residents, but the city’s rule is that the meetings have to held in locations which are not on bus routes.

Wanna hear about the supervisor who sneaks out to tend bar for Big Ang?

Zoozermom, it is not sanitation workers, we don’t have town collection,we pay for our own…

Time increased as i left and came back, they were still there, lol…
