publics, privates, and transferring

a thread below, there is a young woman who chose a state flagship, in large part for reasons of money (she also had too short, and, IMO, a poorly selected list of colleges that she originally applied to).

The school did not work out well for her, in part due to size, and in part due to its party scene. Now she wants to transfer, and folks are warning her, correctly AFAIK, that fin aid as a transfer is more difficult to get.

This got me thinking.

Given that, if a young person is deciding between a private with financial aid, and a state school without, does it not make more sense, all else being equal, to try the private - if they don’t like it, and want to transfer, at least the lower COA at the public will still be there. But if they want to go the other way, the fin aid package at the private will likely not be there.

Hmmm?
