I’m going to tag along with my husband on a business trip to Puerto Rico in December. We’ll have a long weekend (3 days) to play after his meeting is finished. Have any of you been there recently? Recommendations for places to stay / eat / things to do? Thank you!

I’ve been to Puerto Rico twice recently as a result of port stops on cruises. Will you be in San Juan?

Two major tourist activities in San Juan I can think of that we did and really enjoyed:

The Fort in San Juan and El Yunque Rain Forest.

You can arrange to take a taxi of all the highlights of the island. When you do, they will take you to the Fort.

The El Yunque Rain Forest was a separate trip and we spent a good part of the day there, also on a personal tour.

Of course you can probably also go on a tour of a Rum factory…just google Puerto Rico and you will see highlights that you can choose from. I personally would stay at a hotel on the beach and go touring each day in the morning and come back & relax by the ocean or pool in the afternoons! Have fun!

My favorite thing in PR about 15 years ago was the Bioluminescent Bay in Vieques. You need to be there in the right phase of the moon, though.
We spent the night on Vieques, but you can do it by catamaran from Fajardo

Where is the meeting? We stayed at the El Convento in Old San Juan and loved it. If you want to be on a beach near San Juan, La Concha is a nice place. If you visit the rainforest, and have a car, Wyndham Rio Mar is also nice. Vieques is beautiful, but 3 days isn’t really enough time for everything.

Thanks for the suggestions! The meeting is in San Juan, but we could stay somewhere else for 3 nights if we’d like. I’d love to spend relaxing time on a beautiful beach somewhere - are the beaches in San Juan nice? Crowded? If you’re looking for some down time on the beach, would you stay there or look for a resort in an area somewhere less developed?

San Juan beaches are crowded. It sounds like you might want to head to Vieques. The beaches were much nicer and many are deserted (Good and bad with that. Don’t leave ANYTHING in your car.) You can get reasonable airfares out of the Isla Grande Airport, which is just west of the main airport. Malecon House is a great place to stay on Vieques and is walking distance to many good restaurants. tripadvisor.com is a great source of information on Vieques.

Agree with the above sites. When we were there it was in early August, many years ago. We stayed at the Hilton, which had a private beach.

Try to catch a coqui. I loved out trip to PR.

Luquillo Beach is about 40 miles away from San Juan and near the El Yunque. It is a nice beach with many food vendors. I wouldn’t go to a deserted beach.

We loved getting food from road side trucks. And Old San Juan has a lovely cafe culture. It is like Europe for getting a coffee in the morning/evening and sitting outside and people watching. Have fun!!

We rented a condo on the wyndham grounds for a week and it was great. The beach was lovely, we were right by El Yunque and the food kiosks at Luquillo were delicious. Do visit the forts and ride the trolley around Old San Juan-it’s beautiful! We tried to do an evening trip to the bio-bay but ended up getting cancelled due to weather. I was pleasantly surprised by our visit and would love to go back and visit the other end of the main island for the surfing.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas! We’ve booked a hotel on the beach in San Juan. Can’t wait to get there :)
