Purdue Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Honestly, every Freshman should live in a crappy dorm with cinderblock walls. It builds character.

My son loves Purdue but I am getting a little concerned that he will get lost. (he is not concerned and I can be an unnecessary worrier, he always seems to rise to the occasion). BUT does anyone have any information, anecdotes etc. about any learning disability centers, ADHD resources, etc. When he goes with my husband in a few weeks I would like them to have some information to aid them in what they visit.

Just wanted to add, he has a language disorder so anything specific to that in addition would be amazing, but I realize that is pretty specific so any insight would be great.

Former Manhattanite - got my first dishwasher at 35! The sacrifices we made for a short commute

If you PM me, I can connect you with a mom in a similar situation who now works in an advisory capacity to those types of students.

From the parent discussion pages the experiences have been mixed from families being happily satisfied to families feeling their student is adrift. There is generally a need for increased self advocacy as compared to high school and its 504 and IEP plans, which would affect satisfaction levels if the expectations don’t adjust. Students have to work with individual professors to ensure any accommodations are available/implemented.

There is an on campus writing center that would be helpful to students with a language disability but again the student has to make use of the supports: The Writing Lab at Purdue - Purdue OWLÂź - Purdue University

There is also one of the top graduate school speech-language pathology programs in the country at Purdue. You could explore therapy options available at the clinic where grad students receive their SLP training.

I suggest reaching out before your visit to disability services. Here’s a link to their most recent annual report: Annual Report - Disability Resource Center - Purdue University

It might ultimately be a you-don’t-know-until-you-try situation.

If you’re in West Lafayette anyway, keep tabs on seatgeek as game time draws near. Sometimes prices drop when someone really can’t go last minute. Also, there is/was an option for season ticket holders to turn in tickets they can’t use (I think for a gift to the university type deal) so you could always double check at the box office then. too. There might be some other allocations that become available last minute. Barring that, watch with a crowd in the Union or local restaurant. Walt’s is just a couple miles from campus in West Lafayette and has lots of screens (restaurant, not 21+)

Apart from winter gear, please use common sense on when to venture out in harsh weather. Obviously I am saying this based on recent events, but the intention is not to discourage you as you will do fine with common sense and appropriate winter gear.

Is there anyone here I could DM who’s recently majored in Physics and can speak about the Physics program and internship opportunities at Purdue?

Hi. Most suggested walkable hotels seem booked for our session. Which Holiday Inn did you mean? I see a few thanks

Which Holiday Inn is considered downtown? Is it the city centre?

Holiday Inn City Center on South St.

There is another cluster of hotels near the highway which would mean driving to campus but is still relatively convenient.

Is that the one folks talked about bed bugs?

I have not heard about bedbugs there. My D stayed there the last time she recruited on campus and said it was nice.

Thank you, someone referenced it in a post above, but said holiday inn downtown, so dont know which one that is

Is it difficult to get an uber at 7 or 715 am? In case we have to look to non walkable hotels.

Not sure about Uber in WL, especially at 7am, but there is visitor parking around the school

Yes. City Center is downtown. It is nice.

Yes, and I am hoping they have been dealt with as that’s where we are staying for daughter’s pick up in May.

Aaahh, that’s what I just booked for admitted students weekend. Where is the mention of bed bugs? I can still cancel for a full refund, but don’t know where else to stay as everything seems booked up.

We have visited multiple times and have always stayed in Lafayette down by the freeway (I65). You don’t get the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in Purdue-life, but the hotels (at least the Marriott brand) are clean and decent price. There are many places to eat, and the drive into campus is easy. We drove to campus at 8:15am on a weekday on our last visit and it was no problem. There are several parking garages around the student center and engineering quad that are really convenient. We’ve never had a problem being able to pay and park there on regular school days. Not sure about game days.

Congratulations on your acceptance! I can’t speak to Indiana weather and how Purdue handles classes and how much students have to move between buildings between classes.
But, as someone who moved from a warm climate to a cold one, I can tell you your body does adjust very quickly. The first winter will be difficult but the key is to get good protective gear (for hands, feet and ears) and avoid long exposures. Don’t buy the cold weather gear in India. You are likely to get better options here. It won’t be so cold in Aug when you first come in.
Good Luck!
