I was looking at Purdue’s website and it appears to have no real music school. I would have thought it did, because of the bands, orchestra and other groups. This seems odd to me, that a major University would have bands, but no real music program? I’m just asking in case you know of some partnership with another school that Purdue may have for music but it’s not obvious to me on their website.

From what I understand, Purdue only offers a minor in music. It’s not so unusual to have a marching band and no school of music.

I just thought any university of that caliber would have a music program. It has so many other characteristics similar to large public universities that all have music programs. Oh well…

When it comes to music “schools” there are many things that cannot be assumed.

I reacted the same when I discovered Villanova has nothing.

Not that unusual, particularly considering Purdue’s emphasis on engineering, ag, etc. Also, considering that Indiana is a smallish state, perhaps this was an intentional decision not to overlap with Indiana University, which has one of the premier music schools in the country. Maybe Purdue and Indiana have some kind of partnership arrangement for music studies.

That also might reflect the fact that universities realize that music major programs are very numerous, and that the cost of trying to build a high level program doesn’t fit their mission/vision or be particularly cost effective for them, especially given the realities of majoring in music and demand for the students majoring in it.

Ball State is another Indiana university which is strong in music.
