Purdue Indianapolis Class of 2028

There isn’t much information out there about Purdue Indianapolis so I thought I would give this information to get it started. (this is from a proud dad of an incoming Motorsports Engineering student)

Here is a link to the Fact Sheet: Fact Sheet - Purdue University in Indianapolis

Indiana University and Purdue have had a shared campus (IUPUI) for almost 50 years but on July 1, 2024 they become separate institutions with some shared facilities.

IUPUI had about 20,000 undergrads and I think the split will be about 3,000 in Purdue Indianapolis (PI?) and the remainder at Indiana University Indy (IUI).

As of 2 weeks ago, there were 900 freshmen enrolled in PI

Students who graduate from PI will have diplomas that say “Purdue”, not Purdue Indianapolis

All of the food service is provided by IUI including the main dining facility (Tower Dining)

There will be two dorms dedicated to PI: North Hall is a traditional dorm on campus and Lux on Capital is more of a standard apartment building about 5 blocks from the PI academic buildings. There seems to be plenty of off-campus housing

There is a way for PI and IUI students to take classes at the other institution

There are 4-5 academic buildings dedicated to PI but PI students will probably take some non-technical classes in some IUI buildings (english, math, etc)

The first thing we noticed when we visited is that the campus is very very clean and there is a LOT of parking lots. That tells me that IUPUI had a lot of commuters.

Based on a conversation with admissions, there are a lot more men than women at PI, but my guess is that because IUI and PI share much of the campus, it’s close to 50/50 on campus.

Long term, the state dedicated over 20 acres for PI to build out its campus but I doubt that much of that will be completed during the class of 2028’s time.

It’s kind of cool that these freshmen will be the first group to go start to finish at the new institution. I’ve reminded my son that there will probably be some bumps and growing pains as the institution grows into its own.

There will be some transportation provided between PI and the main campus at West Layfayette.

PI students still have access to any facility at WL including sporting events

Best of luck to your student in a very unique program!!

“Purdue University in Indianapolis is part of Purdue University West Lafayette,”

I had read about this. PI will not be a separate institution while IUI will be separate from IU’s Bloomington campus.

IUPUI was always and odd but interesting collaboration. Now they are embarking on yet another unique arrangement.
