Purdue University: Class of 2024 Discussion/Decision Thread

My S was accepted ED class of 2024 to the school of HHS (Psychology), did not get any merit award. What type of financial aid (if any) does Purdue usually give to OOS students? Only loans? Nothing?
We know that their OOS tuition is relatively low compared to similar schools; but still. Thanks.

Got Rejected… :frowning:
3.5 GPA
34 ACT

Agree with your comments about CS rejections. IMO, The criteria and qualifications to get into top 50 CS schools is much higher than I think they advertise. It is not about being in the top 1% of applications, it is becoming top 0.2%. Now wondering if my S2 should apply to other schools in the university and work on a transfer plan into CS program while within. I joke with my older S1’s girlfriend who goes to MIT that she couldn’t get in now…a mere 3 years later.

@KSB2019 I am OOS

Could it be the case that your child is over-qualified

@hs2020dad Could it be the case that your child is over-qualified

my son got into SofE, intend to major in computer engr. just wonder which one is harder to get into: Computer Engr from SofE , or CS from CofScience ?

CS in CoS has gotten to be the more competitive admission.

Different focus for the major as well. .

my daughter got into exploratory studies in Purdue, she was also admitted into CSE in University of Minnesota, any suggestions on the selection? thanks.

Accepted to Purdue polytechnic- robotics major!!
International student- india
Got 1440 in sat
Didn’t get any merit scholarship. Btw, does Purdue provide merit based scholarship to international students?
And anyone else applied to robotics?

I am a little shocked @hs2020dad that your son didn’t get his first choice. He is a strong applicant. I am sure he will have good options down the road, no need to freak out yet.

@flowwoo - I don’t think he is over-qualified (if you are referring to Purdue rejecting him for yield protection)…because they accepted him into second major. Also, I saw multiple very strong students in this thread who are accepted as well (including some MIT/Caltech admits) - so I am not sure if Purdue is thinking of yield projection.

CS has become a really competitive major - unfortunately in the EA round he applied primarily to strong OOS univ - almost all of them have major specific admissions and it has become a problem. In retrospect, he should have applied some places where admission is not major specific (I truly starting to feel that: getting into cs at some universities like UIUC, UT, UW, CMU maybe more difficult than getting into an ivy). When the competition is so high, these things can happen. It just stings hard because he is already rejected/deferred from 4 - waiting for RD apps now. He has a CS admit at in-state UMass.

Just called Admission office to clarify their merit scholarship info since there are some discrepancies with Purdue website and their twitter and they confirmed that all merit scholarships were included in the acceptance letters. If you did not get it with your acceptance that means you are not getting it. Some supplemental scholarships will come out later, but there is none for FYE …

https://honors.purdue.edu/current-students/stamps-scholars/index.php

at the bottom it says:

“A preliminary holistic evaluation of Purdue candidates will be based upon their admissions application and a select number of students will be invited to apply for several of Purdue’s prestigious merit awards, including the Stamps Scholarship.”

Don’t know about UIUC and UT. I know for UW, the CS direct admit is mostly reserved for in-state students. It is almost near impossible for OOS applicants.

If she wants to study Computer Engineering then I would go to U of Minnesota. CODOing into the college of engineering could be chancy.

If you’re rejected, can you do a change major? DS applied with only CS major, no second major. The change major button is still there and wasn’t sure if he could click it apply for cyber at Polytech?

@Ddapplyfromcan - son goes to UMN chemical engineering program. It’s been an amazing experience. Their Chemical Engineering program is top 5 in the US. He loves it so much that he stayed there the summer after his freshman year and worked for the U. Sad for me as his parent as we live a flight away from the U but it says a lot about UMN. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best universities!!

I haven’t gotten the impression that Purdue admits based on protecting their yield. But your son sounds great - maybe they thought it would not be his first choice?

Essays are all subjective.

OOS (Texas) son was notified of acceptance into FYE yesterday.

Having gone through this process with several sons, I think that the LOR’s and essays are something which can make an applicant standout from the pack (given similar stats and academics). My son’s school does a wonderful job with these and I have come to appreciate that they probably add that final piece to the admissions puzzle.
