Purdue University: Class of 2024 Discussion/Decision Thread

That’s a very good point. Although for my DS it’s more $8-10k and that is significant enough. Interestingly, GaTech is about that 4-5k in the other direction, and if he gets accepted tomorrow, he will likely go there regardless of aid. So that reinforces your point. It’s all a matter of perspective and how you value a particular school.

Is Purdue tuition for OOS $28K . Total coming out to be $41K ? We have not gotten the financial doc’s yet hence checking?

Yes, the OOS COA is around $41K https://www.admissions.purdue.edu/costsandfinaid/tuitionfees.php

For 2019 I am see $38,824 (tuition, housing, meals) not including indirect costs or books. For OOS of course.

If I applied on the 14th of January, when can I expect a decision?

CS is more

Engineering has extra fees as well. It also depends on what type of housing and meal plan you get.

Notice the fine print extra fees for several programs, including CS and engineering

@Gurpreetn I would not go to Purdue Exploratory Studies and try to get into CS. I would say go to any university that accepts you directly into CS.

It seems that most people that are upset about not receiving merit scholarships have other/better options than Purdue and wouldn’t have accepted anyway. So maybe the fact that Purdue was a safety for them came through in the application somehow. Maybe it stings ego-wise, but it’s not like Purdue was the dream school and can’t go.

Anyway, S didn’t get any merit from Purdue, but we are in-state, not perfect either, so no problem. I think most states have a decent flagship. So happy and grateful to have been accepted!

From what I have read here, it sounds like Purdue may give “need/gift” aid to an OOS student if they received a merit scholarship? Is this a correct conclusion? Does anyone know if this has happened before?
DS is OOS and did receive a merit award.

@Artist2233 Based on Purdue’s own financial aid calculator, that is what I am seeing. It looks like it maxes out at $20K additional aid, up to your expected family contribution value, for OOS with a $10K merit scholarship. I have no idea if the calculator result is really accurate.

There are only 100ish Trustee Scholarships and 800ish Presidential scholarships. This is across all majors and includes both in-state and OOS. I expect the majority go to in-state, which is the right thing to do for a state school supported by public $. That doesn’t leave many slots for OOS FYE and probably even fewer slots for a specific major like OOS CS. After doing the math, I am very grateful for our result.

How popular are the Purdue’s For Me campus visits? We are considering coming for either the February one around President’s Day or the March one that coincides with my daughters’ spring break.

From what I read, colleges already anticipate the % of kids will not attend so they adjust the number of students they make offer to accordingly. Sorry … but I could be wrong.

Purdue for Me (I think it was called something else last year) was a very well run, informative experience for my current Boiler and our family. This was our very first as we did not visit prior to his application (we are from Western NY). Our guide was very helpful and the info sessions and tour were great. I will say that Indiana is pretty brown and gray in February so if you can wait, I’d suggest March where you could get a little warmth and a little more outdoor activity on campus.

I’ve been following this thread for a while as my kid was in this position last year. He applied for FYE but his stats were below grade for that major. He had business as his 2nd choice and he was accepted to that. Shortly after admittance, he decided that he really wanted pre-health professional in the HHS school so he went through the change of major process pre-May 1. The change was accepted but he lost the small scholarship he was awarded by Krannert.

My Boiler has had a great first semester as an intended (now called) biomedical sciences major. Some struggles of course with the distance and change, but the football and basketball games are over the top awesome and he’s really learned how to navigate the huge campus.

I’m happy to answer any questions (that I can) about being a Purdue student from OOS re: Boiler Gold Rush, housing, meal plans etc.

My son waitlisted to Purdue for CS. We were nervous about admissions, but with his stats we thought he had a good chance.

Purdue was his #1 school. Accepted into many others, but thought this would be his place. I just wish I knew why he was waitlisted, they will not tell you that. I know the EA pool has some of the best kids, but I really thought he stood a chance. I thought the search was over.

Does being waitlisted mean he as to wait until all of the regular decision pool is evaluated? Does he give up hope and move on?

Supposedly Purdue is waitlisting many more students this year. Someone more versed on admissions can read the tea leaves on this.

I know of a student last year who was offered admission on April 30. This student did reach out to admissions to further express interest after not getting in as a RD applicant - CS was NOT the major.

He did not attend since he had already moved on by then due to the May 1 decision date.

I would move to Plan A & you could wait & see but I think the odds are very very slim.

@MomofFirst – Was he actually waitlisted from EA, or deferred? (If waitlisted, I didn’t realize Purdue was doing that directly from EA w/o first deferring…) In any event, my S was deferred so I looked at last year’s thread to get a sense of timing. There were quite a few students who reported getting pulled from the WL – and, weirdly, even a few who had been flat out rejected – that received admissions offers in late April. Obviously you can’t count on it… and whatever numbers issues were happening last year may have since been resolved… but it was interesting nonetheless. Good luck to your son. My fingers are crossed for both our kiddos!

Their website says 15% of students receive merit. They offer around 850 Presidential scholarships and 100 Trustees scholarships. They also have around 450 scholarship only available to Indiana residences. They also indicate that the students are considered holistically for merit scholarships (not the top 15%). It’s all on their scholarship page. What additional information should they have provided?

From his decision letter: Unfortunately, because of the competitive nature of the applicant pool, we are unable to offer you admission. However, the committee recognizes you have the ability to succeed on our campus in Computer Science and would like to offer you a spot on our waitlist for Fall 2020 enrollment.

This was from EA. I have seen so many others admitted with lower stats, that is why I wish I new why. Admissions counselor said they cannot tell him. They had to turn away many So disappointing! He was told they had more qualified students than spots. So really makes me wonder how the decision is made.
