HI peeps, which college among the mentioned should be a good fit for an international student(i am from India).
Since i am an international student i will be paying almost the same amount of money (40-50k) :/. I need your opinions so i can pick the right college( I have got accepted into all 3 waiting decision from Duke and Michigan even thou highly unlikely)
I am currently more inclined towards Purdue and the following factors may influence my decision-
- Rankings and job placement
- A more diverse student body
- Friendly atmosphere, I dont want any beefs and i dont wanna die, attacks on indians have been on a rise lately.
- Better opportunities to learn( internships etc)
- On campus job opportunity. This is really important because i want to have a part time job and international students cant work off campus in USA.
- The chance of being a walk-on on the college basketball team. I know this seems ridiculous because all colleges have reputed D1 teams but i didnt have the opportunity to get recruited as i didnt play in the US and they recruit from high schools.
1,3,5 are really important and i need your opinions.
Thanks
West Lafayette and state college (Purdue and Penn State) are likely the safest. However I think you’ll be okay everywhere.
Purdue is a tech school meaning there’s less diversity in majors and student profiles. It can be a plus (if you want to hang out with techies only) or a minus (if you want friends accross all majors). Purdue is also more weed out cutthroat than the others based on what I know (in part because everyone has high stem stats which isn’t the case at the other two, where students come with all kinds of backgrounds) but it’ll be hard everywhere.
Attacks on Indians rising? In the US Indians are doctors, engineers, developers etc. - not a lot of hatred going on. The press reporting in the US is very biased and sensationalistic , and the anti-Indian stuff is because of Americans being fired via the H1B program (true). The CEO’s of companies like Disney are to blame for hiring Wipro to replace their IT staff. American’s response has been to boycott the companies. None of that is happening in Happy Valley, W. Lafayette or Columbus.
All of the universities are pretty safe. You should have nothing to be concerned about. Everyone loves athletes here.
So safety is checked, what about job placements and On campus jobs? Thanks.
In a recent shooting and a recent arson, the suspect thought the victims were Middle Eastern when they were actually Indian.

Not to make OP afraid or anything. College campuses can be fairly diverse and are generally very safe. But you can’t be dismissive of things that are actually happening.
@TooOld4School : OP is referring to actual attacks on Indian Americans, or Indian-“looking” people. It may fly under the radar for some Americans but the concern is real and very strong in India. American universities have had to send delegates to India to try and convince students and their parents to come. Applications are down and even admitted students hesitate.
The concern has to be treated seriously.
@WhatshouldIsay : all three are very similar. Penn State has more influence in the northeast, Purdue and TOSU in the Midwest, all three have national alumni networks, all three offer strong majors, lots of clubs, excellent football, a variety of division 1 sports.
You can look at the University 's virtual campus tour, check out the college town’s website, email admissions to see if they could put you in touch with majors from India?
