Ok I know that push-ups workout your chest and triceps…but in the internet, it says (from more than one source) that it works out your back, shoulders, and abs…Is this true?

you use them to help support your body, so they get a little bit of work, but it’s still mostly chest/triceps

wow…only on cc

[Weighted Push-up](http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/PectoralSternal/WtPushup.html)

you wont get big doing pushups but it does target chest triceps and shoulders.

Pushups are good. I have been doing 100 per day for the past 5 years.

Push-ups do work out your abs, but the key is to hold the right position the whole time - no cheating by letting your stomach sag and your back arch or by sticking your butt up in the air. Doing either of those things takes some of the strain off your abs, so if you cheat it won’t have the same effect on them.

I’m not positive about back/shoulders, but I guess it makes sense.

drink musclemilk

and this is on the college life forum because?

I’m preparing for college, lol. gotta get ripped

*you wont get big doing pushups but it does target chest triceps and shoulders. *

I think pushups make you more toned than making you bigger. I would get protein shake and work out at the gym.

Bench = bigger.
Squatting= bigger.

:D

It depends on your body make-up, but pushups can make your chest muscles larger, esp. if one does elevated pushups and/or w/ extra weight.

I was told a story (I don’t know how true it is) about some star athlete football player who was supposed to have been voted one of the most fit in the league and exclusively did basic no-weight workouts (situps, pushups, squats, etc) during commercial breaks while he watched TV.

yeah, he was in the dallas cowboys. he did like 1000 push-ups a day and he was big.

i bench sometimes too.

im already toned but im quite skinny. even push-ups make me look bigger. :)

I think the same thing, and people have made comments XD. But I am not gaining weight… :\ Maybe I’m just walking around, thinking I’m more toned, puffing my chest out in confidence, and people just think I look like I’ve made progress :P.

Doing pushups is basically the same thing as doing the benchpress (just inverted) - and it’s harder to cheat at doing pushups.

Get rotating push up handles. They actually work. Do them while you watch TV.

haha thanks llpitch

Depends on the positioning of your arms. Mostly shoulders, chest, triceps, and some abs. I’m not sure how back would factor into a pushup. But if you really want to get in shape or build muscle, I’d suggest going to a gym for some free weight work.

its not hard to cheat on pushups…how would one cheat on the bench press? push ups are worthless if you dont have the right form.
