Has anyone every built/made a putting green in their backyard?

If you live by a college that teaches golf course operations and management , you can contact for help or email them.

I’ve thought of looking into it - haven’t gotten very far.

I looked at some websites that offer the service, even some DIY websites, and it looks a lot more complicated (and expensive) than growing some nice grass and cutting it real short.

You would be better off putting down some of the fake putting carpet like at a miniature golf course.

Golf greens can’t just be made from regular lawns. They are very, very, very high maintenance and require specialized mowers, constant watering, rolling, aerating, sanding, etc. For example, you would probably have to mow every three days and water every day in the summer.

I kind of thought the maintenance would be too much. I’ve seen putting greens.

Hmm. Yeah. We weren’t looking for a pet lawn, so I think we will just continue to take the boy to the putting green at the golf course.Thank you!

You can buy portable putting greens. I don’t have any first hand knowledge about them though.

Don’t say YES to this until you get a YES for the clarinet!!

I looked into artificial turf for a dog play area and was surprised at how good the technology has become. It felt really good to walk on barefoot! It was, however, pricey. Still, if I wanted a putting green, that’s what I’d use.

But what happened to the more traditional two-cups-on-carpet for putting practice?

About 10 years ago, we put an artificial, five hole putting green on side of house where we just could not grow grass (basically it’s on bedrock). It was expensive at the time (~$6K).
But still looks fabulous–all year round…and many visitors are surprised that it’s “fake” grass. Since we are a family of golfers, has provided much pleasure and practice. Our kids were the envy of friends when it was first installed. Was a great investment for us.

“as surprised at how good the technology has become. It felt really good to walk on barefoot!”

Yes, it’s amazing. I was walking on some fake grass at a mall in Las Vegas, and I don’t think I would have known the difference if I weren’t looking for it. The only down side is that it gets much hotter than real grass when it is in full sun.

“Pet lawn” – good one, zoosermom.

DH installed a putting green in the backyard of our last house. It was a real DIY project and it was way before the benefit of internet videos.
His info came from the nearby golf course manager. He used regular lawn grass and Bermuda which required that we have two lawn mowers! It was high maintenance but a great selling feature.
