My best friend has decided that she wants to go to Yale, but she has had very bad grades all of high school. (She’s a sophmore but the way our school works she falls under the junior catergory) Is it true that because of the amount of applicants and the competition that if you have C’s and D’s with mayber two F’s that Yale automaticaly won’t accecpt you even if it was just freshamn and sophmore year?

She absolutely has no chance of being admitted. There’s not automatic GPA cut-off, but she would be wasting her application money.

Is the question about a student who never had a grade HIGHER than a C?

That’s what I thought but since she’s my friends I didn’t want to be the first to say it, but I also didn’t want to have false information since I’ve heard different stories on this topic… Thanks AdmissionsAddict for feedback.

She had an A in Art class for one quater but then it went to a C. So yes I suppose you can say the question is about a student who hasn’t gotten above a C. But like I said in reply to AdmissionAddicts post I posted the question because I’ve been told by some that fresham and sophmore years don’t really count, but I’ve always been weary of those stories.

Only Princeton discounts freshman year, of all the colleges I’ve looked at so far.

I think a lot of College Confidential students worry about one or two grades of C here or there (actually, plenty worry about a few grades of B here or there) but that’s a much different situation from struggling to maintain a C average in all academic courses. Such a high school student can still get into college, but I’d expect such a student to be passed over by a college that must, after all, pass over a lot of students with straight-A averages.

yeah…no chance (not to sound rude or anything)…i mean, i’d say the BARE MINIMUM for HYPS is around 75% As, unless there is a medical issue one year, or for a recruited athlete, and even then…
perhaps your friend should look at what yale students have done, and their grades, and look around this forum (i’m sure the 2300s and straight-A kids who got rejected will sober her up) to see if her chances are plausible.

I thought that even if you had more than like 30% of your grades below A would mean tough chances at HYPS…

Megan: Maybe you can re-direct your friend to consider WHAT she is seeking out of college. To me, choosing Yale out of the blue without any consideration to realistic admissions standards is just grabbing after a name or a reputation. At this stage, that’s OK but if it doesn’t lead to more practical things as well as buckling down and really seeking to excel academically, she’ll be in for grave disappointment.

If she maintains around a C average, she’ll have serious problems entering and performing well at most 4 year colleges.

Maybe direct her to a trusted teacher or counselor who can give her objective guidance? Best of luck to you and her.

Thank you all for your feedback. T26E4 I will def. take your advice. And I agree with your feed back. kingmo1990 I don’t think you sounded rude. I posted this for honest feedback and that’s what you gave me. Thank you all again for your feedback.

I feel like she could win the IMO next year and still get rejected. Sorry…

Tell her it ain’t happening

Jules Winfield: I find your reply interesting but true. Once again thanks for your feedback.

I think everybody is probably right…but hold on just a second. Does this student have some extremely unique talent that sets her apart from others? Is there some special reason her grades have been low (illness, for example), that she has overcome and is now getting top grades? You have to know something about the person before you can make a categorical statement–although it’s certainly true that a person with low grades, low scores, and nothing else special is not going to get into Yale by chance, or based on an essay that impressed somebody.

She has a talent for drawing. But no illness or other reason for low grades other than, from what she has told me, lack of motivation and work ethic. Report cards just came out today and she says she recieved 4 C’s, 1 B, 2 A’s, and 1 D’s. The A’s were in Band and Gym. The B was in World History. And I don’t know what subjects the other grades were in. I hope this helps Hunt.

How did she get interested in Yale? What other colleges is she thinking about?

^Ouch. Megan, with all honesty, I think your D should consider other safeties. But who knows? If she is a world-class artist, she might get in…

She got interested when Yale sent me their 2007-2008 bulletin. Yale has always been at the top of my list for schools because I love what they offer, and the atmosphere around campus. But I know Yale is extremely difficult to get into so I’m looking at other schools also but do plan to apply to Yale. So she decided that since I love Yale she was going to go there also. As far as other schools she’s considering they would be all the school’s I’m looking at excluding the religious affliated ones. So that would be Washington Unoversity in St. Louis, and Syracuse University, and Harvard.

^^^^So basically, she is you. Lol.
