Qualcomm to layoff possibly 4000 employees

Did anyone else hear this? We heard it on our local news this morning and don’t know how they will prioritize the layoff.

At least they’re hiring lots of interns. Great employer.

I’m glad my daughter didn’t get an internship with Qualcomm. She was introduced to the HR guy from her professor but for some reasons he never contacted her.
Qualcomm is not a great employer, there were complaints about them, I’ve heard on TV. I walked out in the middle of an interview process, that was in the early 90s, usually not a good indication. A bit male chauvinistic place, IMO.

Gotta disagree. I have tons of friends at Qualcomm, most of them women, and all have had great experiences. I don’t think what you hear on tv or what they were like in the 90s is a fair assessment.

Things must have changed now. I know the VP of engineering is female graduated from Harvey Mudd. This is my experience back in the early 90s. When I was there interviewed mostly older guys from defense industry.
I did interviewed with one young guy who was a graduate of Harvey Mudd who was nice, but a few older guys were a big turn off. It’s not so much what they asked but how they asked and formulated.

I don’t remember that about Qualcomm. I knew them since their inception. I was one of their closest neighbors. Several of our employees had spouses who worked there. What I recall is how surprised I was at how young and inexperienced they took their engineers. I recall them being remarkably strong with women for the time.

Interesting, when I was interviewed, there was no female interviewer, all males.

So, not having a female interviewer on your particular case means…

You walked out in the middle of an interview?

Probably not a lot of female engineers working there. Did you actually know a lot of female engineers, your post didn’t state so.
I walked out because the geographic location of Qualcomm is at best a stretch for me and I didn’t like the last middle age guy I interviewed with. So I figure I didn’t need to waste his time nor mine.
But in general I don’t do that even if the questions are hard, it’s just this guy attitude that bothered me.

That’s too bad you walked out. Qualcomm created quite a few millionaires not much subsequent to that.

Qualcomm is not the only one that created millionaires in my career. I had interviewed with Apple when it was $16 back in late 1990, and Broadcom when it was granted lots of stocks and ended up with stock options at different companies that also worth millions.
But if the environment was not suitable for me, it made no difference. I’ve worked for a guy whose face was on Newsweek magazine, he treated me with much more respect. It made going to work every day much easier, with or without stock options.
